I have heard and seen ice being used with water and driving around. Never tried it. I just fill the tank several times and drain. Sometimes my tank probes will still show 1/3 after draining but I know the tank is empty. Moisture on the probes will register a fluid level. After the probes dry, they will read empty. Not sure if that's an answer you are looking for.

Frankly most of us gave up on that probe real soon after we bought our rigs. Many things tried, few to none that really work. Most of us know how long we can go between dumps, for us it's two weeks. Others wait till it burps. Others of us have added outside the tank monitors and they do work, but I wouldn't do it again. I seldom look at them.

We have found the talk probes useless. Like
Dick said just set up a system to know when to drain. We do once a week and that work for us.

Agree, having owned trailers of one brand or another for 40 years, never had accurate tank readings. Don't even pay attention to them.

I have the Iseries tank monitor, which uses external moda sensors that you need to apply to the ends of the tanks used in montanas. I know at a glance exactly what percentage is in each tank. The tank monitor put in most rvs is worthless!! Cleaning to try to get them to work is a waste of time and money in my opinion...as I tried on two different rigs and never got any results. If you want to try something...the probe system really needs minerals in the water to have any chance of reading...try dumping epson salt or table salt in a tank to see if that will work. I gave up before trying it, don't know what amount would or wouldn't work. You can be the trialhorse if you wish. John

There are many posts on many RV sites refering to tank monitor lights and their innacuracy. After a time, you'll learn about how long you can go before you have a full tank and what to do to lengthen that time. Trying to make the monitors dependable is an uphill battle. Water and crushed ice sloshing around in the tank while driving down the road may remove whatever is stuck to the probes inside the tank, but I've never heard of anything you just put in the tank made specifically to dissolve the offending substance away. Calgon more makes the inside of the tank (slippery) so stuff won't stick as bad. The chemicals are more for order and helping to break down solids. Some chemicals have additives that supposedly help lube the gates on the dump valves. There are aftermarket sensor strips that adhere to the outside of the tanks that are accurate. I think you can even use the existing wiring up to your OEM monitor panel for the new monitor. Just Google holding tank monitors.

We too, pay no attention to the sensors. We dump once a week and have never over filled a tank.

Same as most others we never had tank sensors that worked in any of our 6 Rv's.

We are full timers and never give a thought to our worthless tank sensors. As stated above we have grown to know when the tanks need attention.

Hi
After I installed the probes in their proper locations in accordance with the system manufacturer’s instruction sheet they have worked properly ever sense.
However they are not direct reading like the gas gage in your car or truck they have a 10 to 15 minuet lag after the last use of the tank or last movement of the trailer to read properly. An example is if you dump a full tank it will take 10 to 15 minuets before the indicator will catch up because the liquid has to drain off the probe and if you use a wetting agent like Calgon it may take a little longer.
