Top of Slide came out on Exit Ramp

Just like the title said, on an exit ramp today, around the curve, the top of my rear slide came out, I am assuming from the inertia, maybe took the curve to tight and fast... as soon as I got straight again, it popped back in, Came out about a foot. The bottom was still nice and tight....anyone else ever have that happen? I guess it makes sense it is possible since the top is not secured, but still thought it was weird and has never happened to me before..

Happened to us going from a small state highway to a US highway. We made a 270 degree turn which I did not recall as too fast. A trucker pointed and blew his horn and we pulled over and stopped. The top of the slide had stayed out after the turn. It seems as we made the turn, the top of the slide went out and a jar of pickles came out of some where, and rolled under the slide (didn't break)...so the slide could not return to its full in position. It was our middle slide...with the refer and M/W in it.

We had it happen on a tight curve with our last unit. Unfortunately dog bowl got caught when it tipped.

if you have your cabinets full that could certainly add some weight to the centripetal forces. I've never noticed the top going out on curves, but we've experienced the top coming in several times when parked in extreme winds.

this was my rear slide , with the fridge, fireplace and TV.
I guess I feel s little better knowing it has happened to others, just never happened to me before..

It was the kitchen slide for us and like rames14 the dog bowl went under it. Fortunately I could stand on the steps and push it out at the top and wife removed the bowl.

I place a 2x4 with some short pieces of wood on the ends and place on top of the slide when i retract it so that wont happen. Make sure you remove them before you extend the slides. I have never had a slide come out before so i did this so i would not have to deal with it.

Rich, while I agree it should not have happened, I'm trying to think through what the problem might be. just in theory, since they are not secured at the tops, it is possible. there is no locking mechanism to secure them.
What do you think the problem could be?
Just thinking physics, if it is secured at the bottom but not the top, there is nothing , technically, to prevent it.

any of you that have had it happen, did you report it to the dealer or keystone, and have them look at it for any kind of problem?

I have honestly never hear of this happening. On the other hand some members have seen slide creep during prolonged storage, but never on the road, that is very scary!

kozzy ... you're deductions are right ... there is nothing physically holding the slide from teetering at the top. The extension arms and bracketry below the slides are not beefy enough to prevent this. Seldom does a flush slide sit completely flat on the main floor when retracted. If you go inside and push on most any of them, they will teeter at the top a bit. You could adjust the slide to sit flat on the main floor when retracted, but then when extended, it won't seal up properly. A little better than 10 years ago the slide out locks were semi popular, but it only takes one time to forget and partially pop the inside facia off the slide.

Wow, in all our travels nothing like this has ever happened to us. Always thought there was a hydraulic locking system within the slide system to prevent.

yeah no locking on the top, I'm going to call the dealer and talk to them, see what they say. I might actually call keystone too just to see what they say.
Ill admit I went into the curve faster than usual, it didn't look as sharp as it was. But I do need to find out more about it...because there is nothing to lock in the top, I cant officially say it is broke, especially because it functions normal, opens and closes fine, and seals up the way it should both open and closed. very interesting for sure.

Call Keystone Customer Service first and get a case or file opened. Then take it to your dealer and have them check it out. Since it is a 2016 unit Then , you are still under warranty and it should be covered under it! Tell your dealer you have talked to Keystone and that a file/case has been started on your unit and they should have no problems then.

Mike ... the slide cylinders are "locked" in place when you let off the slide switch ... it's just that there is enough flex in the extension arms and brackets to allow movement at the top in extreme situations. When your slides are retracted, look between the slide floor and your main floor. Seldom do the flush slides sit flat on the main floor ... you'll see a space. Push hard at the very top of the slides and you'll probably be able to rock it a bit. All this being said, I reckon it wouldn't hurt to have it documented in case there might be a cracked bracket or something. I've taken a railroad track at a pretty good angle before and noticed my main slide move a bit. It seals good extended or retracted, so I just chalked it up to everything doesn't stay square when there's a little strain on things.

They all do it the transporters put a device on the top inside of the slides most likely to do it like the kitchen slide for the trip from the plant to the dealer. It depends on the radius of the curve and speed involved.

In my case I have wondered for years why the trailer didn’t roll over.

It is quite typical to happen with the galley slide. it is a narrow slide, and lot of weight up high with full fridge/freezer, pantry shelves, microwave, etc.. makes it prone to cantilever out at the top because it is held fast at the bottom. If you ever see your long slide tip out, then you are probably really close to seeing your 5er flop over on it's side on a sharp turn that is being taken way too fast.

You don't see it usually happen with the living room slide because it is a lot wider and has a lot of weight on its floor, down low, from the couch and dining room furniture. Same thing with the desk slide and bedroom slide.

well, this was with the galley slide only, none of my other ones did it at all..
