G614 valve stems

When ordering new G614's several weeks ago, I told the tire dealer that I wanted high pressure stems, for at least 110 psi, and that they needed to be about 2 inches long to allow me to install my TST 507RV monitors. I dropped off the 5 wheels/tires the day before the tires were to be delivered, and when I went the next day, they had regular stems installed. 2 1/2 hours later, I left with the new tires installed on my wheels, with high pressure stems barely long enough to get the cap on the end. Seems these aluminum wheels don't come with stems rated any higher than 80 psi for the E range tires. Replacement stems longer than 1 1/4 inch are hard to get in some areas from what I experienced. Has anybody else run across this problem? I have longer stems ordered from an online site.

My Goodyear dealer put on longer stems without me having to say anything. Strange.

The only problem is, if the stem is not the all metal style, screwed together either outside or inside the wheel, it is probably only rated 80 psi. As the tire guy was breaking down the first tire to replace the stems, and I was reading the package of stems he was going to use, and discovered the 'high pressure' stems were only rated 80 psi, and they were the part rubber style that were just pulled into the wheel. I was not happy, as we were trying to get out of town at a decent hour, traveling to spend the holidays with the family.

When my G614's were installed I asked to have the stems long enough to accommodate my TPMS. There was never a question about being metal stems they put them in without being asked or told.

I had one rim with a different sized hole than the other three which made it a bit interesting but the problem was overcome easily in the store.

Not a chance I would be using non metal stems on 110 psi rims and tires.

I think to some tire dealers, High pressure is 80 PSI. When I had the 614s put on our Monty I asked for Hi pressure stems and got the same thing, those rubber pull in stems. Had to get one replaced as it caused a slow leak and would of had the others changed, but we traded for our current SOB.

I maybe incorrect, but thought your 2012 had steel stems even though your tires may have been 80 psi rated. As an aside your rims should be rated 110 psi. Sound like the tire dealer you were using was either unfamiliar with your request or didn't have what you asked for.

I am running Michelin LT tires and asked tire dealer for all metal stems and that's exctly what I got and are plenty long enough.

Any place used to dealing with larger trucks should be able to supply the proper stems.

Tom is right any tire shop dealing with larger truck tires will have lots of the steel stems. My rims were rated for 110 psi and 3750 lbs but they came with pull through stems.

I phoned Tredit Tire and was told the rims at one time were all the same with the smaller hole, new shipments have all been with the enlarged hole. This is the shoulder? hole not the size of the hole for the stem itself. Makes a difference on the way the stem is held in place, on 3 the nuts were on the outside, the "Non Reamed" one has the nuts on the inside and uses 2 nuts, one as a lock nut.

I offered to buy another rim if they would put it in a shipment out to their Oregon plant and I could pick it up there but they would not do that, they would ship directly to me for $40.00. The Oregon facility does not stock the ones for my Montana.

Yupp I got reamed and they were trying to goose me as well.... That would have been my Christmas goose of course, just a little early.

Got a better one. I took my wheels (with the stock metal stems) in for new Firestones and didn't realize until I'd gotten back home that they actually took the metal stems off and put standard rubber ones on. It's almost impossible to just get 80 lbs in with those wiggly things. I called them and reamed the service guy out, but I think he couldn't understand why that happened either. This is another little job I've got planned to do early next spring - Tredit sells the stems for about $2 each plus shipping & there's a good used tire place not far from me.

I'm sure I'm misreading this post. Are you putting 110 psi in a tire on a rim rated at 80psi?

Orv the OP has a 2012 - 3402RL it would come with rims rated at 110 psi and 3750 lbs, however like my 2012 with the Marathons the original stems were only the rubber ones which was ok for the original 80 psi tires.

I don't have to worry about stuff like this as Trailer Tires and Wheels knew that supplying me with medium duty commercial truck tires with wheels and tires rated to 4805 lbs and 125 psi meant Hi-pressure valve stems. I did a lot of reading on various forums before I left the Marathon tire issues behind me and went the route of commercial tires/wheels. Of course, now I can't afford to change out all the pancake style lights in the montana to the 2014 style 4 inch or larger LED fixtures for another year or so...but safety before desire. John
