Replace Brakes on Montana
We have a 2001 328RL Montana 5th wheel the axles are AK – KO USA and the brake backing plate has the following info stamped on it
1000 359
PRI-GG SEC-GG
12 x 2 ELEC
AL – KO
The Backing plate has 5 bolt holes.
The Tag on the axel has the following info
SLR 373 MM
IBO or LBO
6000 Lbs
By this I assume the Brakes are 12”x2” I can find plenty of Dexter brakes online but am having a problem finding the AL-KOUSA brakes. You can purchase online a Dexter 12”x2” backing plate with all brake parts for around $60.00 per wheel. I have not found anything for the AL KOUSA. Does anyone know if the Dexter Brakes will work on the AL-KOUSA axle as a replacement?
Thanks in advance.
Frank

I would consider going to the "self adjusting" brakes if your are going to replace all. Yes they are a little more in cost but should fit. Again coordinate with Dexter.

If you do a search for "Al-ko brakes" you will retailers that handle their brakes plus the manufacturers website. As others have indicated, I believe the Dexter parts will work. Dexter retailers will know

Thanks for the Replys. I will contact a Dexter Dealer Monday and see what they have to say. I sure hope they will retrofit because Dexters are so common. I will look at the self adjusting that sounds better also.

Thanks again for the great information. I used Charlie's search and found what I needed. I also took John's suggestion and decided on the self adjusting type. I found that the Dexter should replace the AL-KO. I did some further research and found there were 2 versions the 6,000 lb and the 7,000 lb. The only difference in the 6,000 lb axle brake and the 7,000 lb axle brake was the 7,000 had a stronger magnet and different composition of the linings so I decided to go with the 7,000 lb version for the added braking. I purchased the Dexter
12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - L.H. / 7k #K23-464-00
12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - R.H. / 7k #K23-465-00
From http://www.easternmarine.com
for $63.50 each. Best price I found. I will update post when I receive them and get them installed.
Thanks again Everyone for the help.

Just so I understand, the different part numbers are for Left Side and the Right side but you'll need two sets for each side, right, or four kits total?
I see that the price is about $10 higher per assembly ($40 for all four) for the Never-Adjust. That's well worth what I have to do now - jacking up the rig, supporting each side, then rotating each tire until it's adjusted correctly, then dropping everything back down and doing it all for the other side. I do this about once a year and I'm only part-timing.
That is a great decision on the kit with the self adjusting brakes.

I agree with others on the self adjusters. I have manual adjusters and they are a pain to keep adjusted for optimal performance. I plan to get the self adjusters the next time I have to make the adjustment. I only wish I had done it last year when I put new shoes on and cleaned up from the easy-lube seals leak.

Art that is correct one part number is left (Driver) side
12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - L.H. / 7k #K23-464-00
and the other is right (Passenger) side.
12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - R.H. / 7k #K23-465-00
$63.50 each
The brakes for the 6,000 lb axle were a few dollars cheaper. But thought I would benefit from the stronger magnets since I am fairly heavy.
6,000 LB
Left Hand
12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - L.H. / 6k #K23-458-00
Right Hand
12" x 2" NEV-R-ADJUST™ Electric Brake Assy - R.H. / 6k #K23-459-00
$52.95 each
