I'm not positive, but I think AARP starts targeting us when we turn 50 with mailings. Retired from the Postal Service, I can tell you that such mail will come long after I die!!!! Dennis

After reading the whole thing, there are quite a few benefits.
It does say 50..... Hmmm............
I know you're right when you say the mail is coming.

Sneaks up on you doesn't it?
I joined as soon as I was eligible and got some great deals. Went to Hawaii 10 yrs ago or so and stayed at the Maui Marriott for about $140/night special AARP rate at the time vs normal $280/night (50% off). Unfortunately they don't offer that any more.
But there are still lots of other savings you can enjoy.

That's what I'm thinking also about joining.
I've made it this far.
It's like a bonus.
I'm going to love being 50 something.
BUT NOT YET!!!!!!!!
I still have 7 months to be 40 something.
Must do something totally unique....
I have a plan....gotta go....later.....
(Oh no,,!!!!!,,just remembering my mom's "Nifty Fifty" party! NOT!!!)

50 is the age and it is not a bad organization to belong to.Many benefits and some good lobbying for older folks. If you are a retired Fed NARFE is also a good organization. We belong to both..

I am ONLY 48 and get their mailings all the time???? Perhaps I look older than I am???? I do have to admit there are times I feel older than I am, thank God those are offset by times that I feel younger than I am (camping, biking, playing with kids and pets, and hopefully now boating). I don't know where AARP gets their list.

When I first turned 50 (17 years ago) my mother signed me up and it really angered me. It didn't take long to realize that there are some real savings that occasionally come up as a reward for being a member. They also do lobby for us "senile citizens." Nothing we can do will stop it (aging) so just enjoy it, Lisa. These are "The Good Old Days."

Been an AARP member now for about 10 years! Gives away my age--oops! they do target the 50th birthday coming up. Anyway, they do have some good beni's and they have a road emergency/travel program also. I'm in the process of checking on it to see if the expanded plan covers us in the Monte with the TV or not. Check it out especially when you hit the half century mark!
Rich- You're right NARFE is another good group to belong to. I retired from the Post Office three years ago and joined then. Get a lot of info from them on our retirements and pending legislation concerning Social Security, Medicare and the like.
Dennis-- Let me guess-- management right??!!??--LOL--

Looks like I'm the lone dissenter hear. These posts are not supposed to get political, so I'll avoid that angle...and just say that AARP is way tooooo near the Pacific side of politics for my liking, check them out, read what they do and whom they support. There are lots of places to get all the "benefits."

Tom, I am with you.
I have been a member for 11 years and the only reason I can think of is that after we sell our business in 5 years and go full timeing, I am going to vote a straight Dem. ticket, love AARP and let my Nephews and Neices worry about paying my SS!

My wife was solicited by them to join via mass mailing many times Before (I was mean and teased her a lot) and after she turned 50.
I just turned 50 and it was only several months later that they first contacted me. Hmmmm, Sexual Discrimination?
So far, Escappees and TDR are the only "costly" clubs/organizations (besides Church) I've joined.

The AARP has supported some legislation we did not agree with and we let them know. My Government both parties supports legislation we do not agree with and we let them know.. such is life...on the whole my Governmnet is a good one and AARP also does a lot of good..

I thought AARP was the Assoc of Right People? No wonder I retired from the PO. Yea, Rondo - management, but know I did deliver mail too both city and rural...way back there. Carriers are great!

As Rich(faa) says AARP is good but they are indeed Pacific sometimes and it's a good with bad situation. I do believe though that AARP did lose membership and maybe broadening their membership base from 50 to Bingo's age, a mere child!!

Also too left coast for me. After three tries I finally got them to remove our names from their data base.

Yes there are lots of places to get benefits, but not all places you visit take all those benefits. It's nice to have a variety on hand. I have had AARP for 16 years (oops!) In many of my motel rental trips, AARP was the best discount offered. I usually start with "retired military," on through the credit card discounts and on to AARP. Sometimes I just ask, "What is the best discount that you offer." When they reply and I don't have it I'll ask for another one. AARP hasn't failed me to many times. Even some campgrounds give AARP discounts and not other RV Club discounts. And don't forget just plain old "Senile Citizen."

The price is cheap and the benefits are pretty good, as are the savings.
