shower drain 'thing'

I have read about the replacement for the P trap in the shower. However, no one ever said how to clean them if they get plugged up. I was showering the other night, and the water immediately starting filling the base. I just stepped on the opening and 'squished' it down and the drain flowed easily. But what would I do if it didn't start up again?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Tom,

Are you sure it was plug, and not the holding tank is full?

But in answer to you question, most are accessible from the basement. The item is a HepVo Valve. If you un-screw it you can wash the membrain inside with soap and water.

The following is the link to a video, where Ray replaced the p-trap with a HepVo value.

We had that problem about 5 years ago. Since then we have used one of those stainless steel strainer in it and haven't had an issue ever since. Have to clean the strainer at least every other day, however. This is what we use in every sink:https://www.amazon.com/Camco-42273-A...+sink+strainer

I use a small bottle brush. Just run it into the drain and the crud comes off and water drains fine. Just be careful to not damage the membrane.

What you did is usually all that is required for it to clear itself, I did take it apart and clean out the hair once. Thought about changing it to a regular trap but thought I would see if it caused problems, we've been living in the Monty pretty much full time for 7 months now and no issues.
