Fender Brace

Looking over the 5er today and see that up under the fender is a flimsy plastic brace running along the inside of the fender. Has anyone had one of these plastic braces break? One of mine (on the kitchen stove side) looks like it is coming loose.

My camper had cheap aluminum brackets and l could watch the wheel wells flapping in the breeze. I made new ones out of 1/4 x 1 inch aluminum. I had 6061 aluminum which won’t bend without breaking so I made L braces and welded them together. I anchored the tops with no. 12 wood screws and the bottoms with 10 32 stainless bolts and nuts. One 12 foot bar should be all you need. I think each side took 3 brackets.

Thanks! I had already replaced all the cheap screws with nuts and bolts. I like your idea mlh, I would like to do the same. Do you have any pictures?

Don I don’t have pictures but it’s really straight forward. Take one of your brasses off and make a stronger one. I ueed 6061 aluminum that had to be welded because it won’t bend 90 degrees without breaking. The 5000 series aluminum will bend 90 degrees. Some times I have hundreds of feet of it but I don’t think I have any now. You can go to any sheet medal machine shop they should have something that will work. And thing from 3/16 to 1/4 inch thick and 7/8 to 1 1/4 inch will work. They should be able to shear it for you out of a sheet. Then you can drill the holes in it and bend it in a vice with a hammer. It’s really nothing to it. If I can do it anybody can.

Wow Mike and Debbie, that is a work of art! I had one go missing, so i just took some 1/8" x 1" st stl flat bar and there is a bolt coming down from the floor under there, so I just drilled a hole and used one of those aircraft nuts with the nylon in it, so it will never come loose, and then bent it towards the fender, and then bent i down flush to the fender, and the one screw that they have going thru the middle of the fender, I took a scribe and put it thru the hole and scratched the brace i made, and took it off and drilled the hole there and use a 10-32 st stl screw and one of those aircraft nuts as well, and it is solid as a rock now. No one will go under there and give me a C+ grade compared to Mike and Debbie's A+ grade, but it does the same truck! Took only about 20-30 minutes total to do as well. :-)

Fender brace

Vipermanden - in full disclosure...that was not my brace. It is on my list of things to improve! That pic came from a guy over on the Keystone RV forum - which generally covers all Keystone brands. Fender braces are a universal concern for all Keystone products...probably all RVs. I had a Laredo travel trailer before the Monte and I read the Keystone forum so I remembered that post from a year or two ago...but the quality of information shared on this forum is in another class from that forum.

I went to Home Depot and bought a couple pieces of 1/2" galvanized strip 4 ft length. Used a vise and hammer to get the angle I needed.

You might have to measure in place to get the right angle. Drilled the holes in the end and installed in place. installed a couple on each side.

When finished in strengthen the fenders up nicely.
