Sounds like the supply piping, or flush valve is either leaking, or the valve itself malfunctioned and leaked causing the stool to overflow. I would get a rebuild kit for the flush assembly. And check the connections for tightness.
If it has a shut off valve, shut it off at night and on in the daytime so you can keep an eye on it.
