Lockable gas caps!
Well, now that a tank of fuel is around the $100.00 level, I guess that it is time to get some lockable gas caps! You never know what nut is going to try and get gas the "cheaper" way!

Yeah, I been thinking about that. If they want it real bad, they will just pry it off. But it never hurts to try to get them to seek an easier target.

Just crawl under the truck and punch a hole in the plastic tank.

Yeah! And the problem is that they will only take a gallon or two and let the rest run on the ground. And it's not just plastic that they will do it to.

I put a locking cap on mine right after I bought it. For $15 it's a little piece of mind. It's kind of a pain to deal with but until manufactures start using locking covers for our trucks to protect our fuel I'll fight with another key.
If they want your fuel, they'll get it, just like anything else.
At least make them work for it.

Rash of thefts the past couple of weeks around the university -- all had holes punched in fuel tanks to drain. I just topped off today in KC MO -- $125 -- and if it were taken not covered by insurance (at least from what I hear -- imagine my deductibles would be higher anyway).

With the price of fuel, we'll be preventing crooks from commiting felonies!

Some high tech company needs to come out with an alarm system for the fuel tank and the locking fuel caps.

There have been a increase of fuel thefts in this area also. Some stations in the "inner city" have hired security because of the increase in drive offs. The preferred method, according to our local PD, of fuel thefts is the ...punch a hole in the tank method as many of the newer models make it difficult or nearly impossible to siphon fuel and it takes to long. Targets of opportunity are businesses or storage areas where many vehicles are parked overnight. Did you know that new vehicles are shipped from the factory with only a small amount of fuel aboard. In the case of the LB Ford diesel..12 gallons. A knowledgeable fuel thief can punch a hole in the tank and fill a 5 gal container in a very short time. A tip off to The PD is to see a vehicle with several 1 or 2 1/2 gallon containers aboard because a 5 gal container is in many cases to large to fit under the average vehicle. Information as a result of Bkfst with a retired cop.
