Finally got the 3rd AC installed.

Finally got all my research done and had the third AC installed. Put in a 15,000 btu Penquin to go with the other two 15,000 btu units. Had to cut one of the supply vents to get the outlet head for a non-ducted unit to fit. The 3rd AC prep is set up for a ducted unit, but they also have the electrical set up so that the added AC can only run if the bedroom one has shut off. Due to that there are nowhere near enough vents for three AC's to be running thru the ductwork at the same time. Thus the non-ducted unit. The switching device was located behind the furnace return air vent near the door of my unit. We disconnected from that and put a breaker in the basement and then added a 30amp connection beside the convenience center to power the unit. Keystone had run a wire for the thermostat to the wall behind the control for the vent fan so mounting the thermostat was easy. 96 degrees in full sun today and the new combination worked great.

About $1900 including tax. But it cost more than it will for the next guy because neither myself or the tech had ever done one and so things like the vent issue etc burned up paid hours while we worked out solutions. The one thing I will say is that Joyce was pretty sure it wasn't necessary, but was convinced it was a good idea after just the first afternoon.

Sweet install dick! With the new norms in weather across this country, I feel you are at the front of the pack in this need. My old white monte still works pretty well and no new unit is planned for us.

So did you go with 30 amp connectors on the power cord?

Yes, currently I'm 30amp from the rig to the box. The outlet on the side of the rig is a 30amp and the EMS is 30amp also. I have dog bones, however to go to 20amp in a variety of ways.

I like it! I had the 3rd AC added before my initial purchase last month, but they wired it as designed, which means I can't run it at the same time as the front AC. This completely defeats the purpose as far as I'm concerned.

I plan to have it rewired to use the vacuum breaker on the same bus as my main AC. Washer and Dryer are on the other bus and get a lot of use. EMS leads me to believe I have the available amperage on this bus to do it, though I'll have to manage that a bit against the toaster or other small appliances. We don't drink coffee, so that helps.

I like your idea of adding a separate 30amp line just for the AC though. I might need to reconsider my plans.

My AC is a direct dump as well. Louder than the whisper, but worth it IMO. (I still need to add additional returns and registers into the whisper ducting.)

Thanks for sharing this!

No problem. I didn't go with the Keystone sharing idea because on a 100 degree day I didn't want to have to decide what end of the rig was going to be cool. I went with the outside wiring because I learned with solar that my wife wasn't real good at remembering what could and couldn't be done at the same time and frankly I didn't want to have to also. The way it's wired now we do what we want and don't worry about it.

From a severely mechanically challenged Montana HC owner

Here in Central Florida the two units can’t keep up. The one added in the Bedroom seems to dump all air, and not connected to the vents?
The living room doesn’t push much through the vents, but does cool off overnight, normally.
If I am in the living room during the afternoon it gets VERY warm with the blinds down and sun reflectors in all windows. The floor is hot to the bare feet.
So seems logical to add a 3 rd unit.
I take it the unit is added where the vent fan is in the kitchen?
In order to run all three units at once I need to add a separate 30 amp line?
Are there alternatives to keeping the unit cool other than addition of a third unit?

We place a small fan on our dresser in the bedroom, blowing the cold air from bedroom down into living room area , when we are in high temps. It does help to move that bedroom air around into the coach.

Before we went with the third AC we added outside sun screens to all windows, did the PVC pipe mod to the return air ducts, cut down the supply ducts and opened everyother fin on the supply vents, added foam insulation to all cabinets and many other areas and used a fan to move air from the bedroom down to the livingroom. Nothing really worked until I installed the third AC. My unit came preped for the 3rd AC in the main room Vent fan hole. You could do what I did with just a 20amp cord, but I went with a 30 because 30amp outdoor plugins were easy to find and 20amp very hard to find. I have dog bones to go from the 30am to 20 if that is the power available so I can work with whatever is available.

Bierp,
I was thinking about wiring my third unit the same way you described. We don't use the central vacuum and have no plans to install a washer and dryer. Did you install the third ac yet? I was wondering if it worked out for you.

I had it installed at purchase, but I haven't yet done the rewire through the vacuum breaker. I had an appointment to do it in November, but I moved it out to March.

If you get it done, let me know how it goes. I'll repost when I get it done. ...if I remember.
