Pulled the trigger on a 3160

My name is Carol, I travel with Larry who owns the truck and I own the camper . I am upgrading from an Open Range 31 foot fiver to a brand new 3160. I full time and Larry joins me for the winter months .
In reading through a few comments , I noticed several members were leaving Montanas to buy SOBs. I thought maybe I should change my mind about Montanas and look on the Internet at this new brand I hadn't heard of , the SOB. A Google search didn't bring up any , then after a few moments (hours ) the light bulb blinked and I realized SOB means some other brand, right?
We don't take ownership of the new 3160 til sometime next week , and as you can tell from the SOB question, I will have some other dumb ones. Oh yeah , I am blonde AND and have senior moments both!

Welcome to the forum! There are no dumb questions here and no one will make fun of you. If you go back and look at some of my first posts you'll see that most of us had little understanding of this lifestyle to start with. If you like the new rig, don't question your decision. There are thousands of members here, just look at the membership list, and the forum is mostly about getting help and solving problems so you seldom see posts from folks who are happy and have no issues but we are out there. Also, our homes are rolling earthquakes and so things do break and need to be fixed. If you look on forums for other brands you also find that SOB's have plenty of issues also.

Carol congratulations on your upgrade. I want to personally remind you to really go over your new 3160 with a fine tooth comb, before and during your PDI. Once you have accepted the unit as is Keystone is not really very willing to help you out. Unless you have an exception dealer you get the same results from them also. We have a 3160 RL LE and like it. So far it has been at the dealership for about 70% of the time since we bought it. We have made three payments and used it three times. With that being said we really do like our unit. We just want the problems fixed. So do yourself a favor and schedule plenty of time for your PDI. There is a PDI list on this website that you could use to help you. I truly hope everything goes well and remember that you don't have to sign on the contract until any problems have been fixed.

Pdi equals pre delivery inspection if you haven't run across the term yet. My guess is that with the huge increase in rvs sold over the last few years, and, montanas being a very large number, that the manufacturers are all building units very fast. And with that comes things not done to perfection as well as some things missed that shouldn't have left the factory and stuff not found by dealers. So, take your time going through the unit, turn on all lights, work everything, and have the person doing the walk-through with you write down everything you feel isn't right. If they move through things too quickly for you, slow them down, make them go through it again, make sure you know how to operate the major systems. If the unit has six point auto leveling, perform an auto level yourself after they show you. And, I would also go into manual mode and understand how it works in manual as well. Just don't retract front levelers/landing gear by mistake and if you do...power off system fast. Welcome and good luck with the new home on wheels. John

Welcome from New England! You've found the most informative Montana-related site on the www. There is plenty of knowledge here to help you through your growing pains as you get comfortable with your new 5th wheel. You've selected a really nice camper and now know where to go for answers to any questions that arise.

Carol, congratulations on the new 3160. We just took delivery of our 3160 in April. This is our third Montana. We have found Keystone and our dealers very responsive over the past 11 years. Everyone's needs are different, but the 3160 fit ours perfectly. If you make one upgrade, be sure to do the G614 tire upgrade. You will find a lot of valuable information on the forum. Choose your dealer wisely, as that seems to be the biggest source of friction. Just like truck manufacturers rely on their dealers for service, so does Keystone. Unlike the auto industry, not all service work is reimbursed. Therefore, non-selling dealers may be reluctant to service your unit. Our three units came from three different dealers. They all three did a great PDI and also serviced us in a reasonable time. This has not been the case with some dealers. Good luck and ask lots of questions. There are a lot of smart, knowledgeable people on the forum.

Thanks to everyone for the friendly welcome, I feel "at home" already. jib27537, I bought from Great Escapes in AR, they seem very friendly and helpful so far. They are two hundred miles from home so I sure hope to find and get everything fixed before leaving. I am doing a trade in so they will have two sites so I can transfer stuff and then I can stay on their lot a night or two. CW in Strafford didn't have the 3160 . My current camper only has 4 point electric leveling, so , jcurtis, can you expand on what you said about manually hitting the front jacks?
We have the pull rite auto slider hitch which the dealer said he didn't like. What do MOC people have? We are getting the unit sometime this week after having airbags put on the f250 diesel. Hope it pulls the heavier camper okay, current UVW is 8425 and we do just fine in all the hills around Branson.

My dealer is closed today so I can't Call . I need to buy new king size sheets before we pick up unit. Is the king bed in the 2015 3160 legacy a true king or 72x80? Thank you for your help

Carol, Our '14 3150 King is 72/80. Our mattress is about 4" think. after one nite, something had to be done.

Went to Walmart and got a foam mattress topper. 4" thick. 2" of plain foam and 2" of memory foam. Think it was $150. Let it air for 2 days to expand and then cut to fit with a electric knife. Our local W/M in Springfield stocks them.

Level up. Just make sure you understand how it works, and make sure your truck is unhooked and clear of the trailer before you hit Auto Level. There are instructions on a decal on the side of the trailer and after a couple of times it is easy, just something new to you.

Pull rite hitch. Everyone has a opinion. One guy likes Fords, the next guy is a GM owner. The dealer may have a reason he does not like a certain brand, or he is wanting to sell you a hitch. You have to have a capture plate to make the pull rite work. You can not tow a trailer with a capture plate with a "normal" hitch. If your new 3160 has the extended king pin, with the rounded front cap on the Montana, you may find you do not need a slider hitch. Assuming you are getting the Mor/ryde rubber pin box, #1116 is the medium, #1716 is the long.

Congratulations on your new unit. We live in mountain home, about 10 miles from great escapes, and had to go to Michigan to get our Montana. Wish we could have bought local, but saved $8k. Enjoy!
