Weird Water Heater

As I was leaving lower alabama because of the storms, I noticed that when I turned on the hot water I got nothing but when I switched to cold I got plenty of cold water. I checked the tank and it was full of hot water. It worked the night before so I am at a loss. I turned off the water when I left. I will be going back in a couple of weeks and would appreciate any ideas.

A common problem is the check valve installed on the tank outlet. It sticks and usually requires replacement. It's installed to prevent the winterizing process from backfiling into the tank when the bypass is on.

I had the same problem but had a different cause. I had taken a shower and turned the water off at the showerhead and forgot to turn off the water valves. Cold water was bypassing thru the shower valve to all hot water faucets and we had no hot water. I checked everything and did everything short of pulling the water heater out of the unit and found no problem. Being frustrated I decided to take a shower hot water or not and found it. Duh, easy fix..
