Actual weights

I don’t usually have anything to add, but I really enjoy what I read here.

My Mountaineer 310RET was advertised to be 11130 lbs and hitch weight was 2295lbs.

The day I bought it I rolled over a scale and the weight of the trailer alone was 12804 lbs and hitch was 2530.

Now that we are set up I generally roll across scales at about 13700 lbs trailer only with 3190 on the hitch.

We are upgrading and I am curious if anyone has weighed a 2019 Montana 3120RL. It states 12050lbs trailer weight as equipped with 2350 on the hitch. I just don’t want to be surprised to badly.

Anyhow, just curious If the Montana weights are more accurate than the Mountaineers were.

Thanks

If you know for sure the loaded weight on the pin, add some to it, and do the math. If the SRW can handle it, bingo. A DRW has issues that you must be perpared to accept. If it is necessary then so be it. If you don't need it, don't.

Our 2017 3720 was well within the weight the truck could handle, but the truck tires aren't made that can handle the weight the truck said it could on the door. Thus our dually.

I’m sorry, I should have been more specific. Thanks for your responses.
I have learned a great deal about tow vehicles here but I am only looking for the actual trailer weights. I confused it by discussing the dually so I will edit original post.

We are scheduled to pickup our 2019 3120RL later this week. On the way home there are several Cat scale locations. I intend to pull in and get a dry weight of the new trailer. I already know truck weights so can accurately calculate pin weight. I will post those numbers later that day.

IMHO any 2500/3/4 ton truck has no business towing any fifth wheel heavier than say, 10,000 lbs.or so. Most 3/4 ton trucks payloads are right at or slightly over 2000 lbs. Not even close enough for any Montana, HC or not

OP I see you have a older truck. It may be time to upgrade that. The newer trucks are so much better at towing. I have a 15 F250 towing a 2003 3280 RL and it does a outstanding job. I know newer trucks are expensive but they have so much H/P and torque that driving them is fun and not a white knuckle drive anymore.
I don't camp with mine much I mostly travel. I only carry what I need . We go on 3 month trips once a year. I always travel with a full tank of fresh water.

Methinks the advertised weight will be close to the real weight as it rolls off the assembly line... everything else adds bloat to the published numbers, dealer installed options probably add the biggest numbers.

DQDick, are you sure about that? I don't see how any manufactor could sell a vehicle whose tires did not support the weight listed on the DOT sticker. For example, my 05 shows a rear GAWR of 6100lbs and the OEM size of 265/70/R17, which support 3195 lbs each, for a total of 6390lbs. A reserve of 290 lbs. I realize that newer trucks weigh more, but they come with taller wheels and 20" wheels can support up to 3750lbs each.

See below a copy of my actual weights. I am slightly over on GVWR but within axle ratings. I have an F350 SRW.

I am updating my truck and trailer. I am looking at Sportchassis and 3500/350 trucks. Back in the day the 2500 was lots, but then the trailers got heavier..........we spent more time travelling, went further etc. Finally we found Keystone Montana’s and just had to have one. Getting close to retirement and longtiming so upgrading both. We have had the Mountaineer on a seasonal site and not travelling much, but we all know I need a different truck to step up to the full Montana and I want to do it right this time. I was just surprised at how much heavier the Mountaineer was than advertised on the pin weight and wondered how other made out. I have told the dealer there will be no sale without a trip to the scale on his truck. He grumped a bit but if he wants the $$$$$$$$ then we go for a ride. I test drive trucks, and inspect houses when I buy them, and these things cost more than my first house did so I don’t think I’m too far out of line. Scale is only 5 miles away.

We considered the sport chassis but checking on insurance scared me away.
Went with the F450 vs 350 for the turn radius, bigger brakes, and axel.
Price difference was very little and at least for us insurance was the same as F-350
The other thing was not exceeding 26k due to licensing.

Thanks for that info. I never considered the insurance. I will check on that.

My Mountaineer specs say pin weight is around 2050. However, actual weight is 2450 or so.

2050 from the factory... load up your trailer and 2450 seems reasonable. thats 400 lbs of weight or roughly 20%-25% of your total load therefore you have roughly 1600-2000 lbs of gear, water, food etc and dealer installed options, if any, onboard. Just a guess.

My problem with the pin weight was my old trailer - a 2980 - quoted the highest pin weight on that years models even tho it was the shortest. It was 2460 or something like that. And that was about what I had - maybe 2550 at most. So when I bought the Mountaineer and it said 2050, I thougt my pin weight would go way down (since I was/am about 400 lb over truck limit). No such luck!

I have a 2018 Montana 3810MS Legacy. The GVWR on it is 16860lbs. The dry weight is 13450 but that is not the weight you care about, the GVWR is the important one. I pull it with a Ram 3500 Megacab dually and when I cross the self weigh scales on the TransCanada on the way to Calgary my weight of truck and trailer fully loaded is over 25,000lbs. so I suspect yours will be very close to that as well.

Also because my GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight) is nearly 25,000lbs. I register my truck for 26,000lbs. GCVWR so if the DOT runs me through a scale I am legal to be on the highway with the weight I have.

CW told me that my 2013 Chevrolet 250 diesel truck would pull any trailer that they had on their lot. Their lot was quite full. Say anything for a sale
