I'm with Chris, every other year unless the company says there is a major change. I find the maps are still behind even with an upgrade.
Happy trails.................

Here we go again.
Are the maps REALLY upgraded?? Not been our experience.
They upgrade the points of interest, and the last Garmin update we paid for, late in the year, $75.00, a bargin, eh??? was worthless.
I did upgrade the Microsoft Streets & Trips from 07 to 08, when I heard from MOC members that there were some improvements in the voice levels, etc. That cost was much lower than the Garmin, sorry, I don't remember the exact amount. Believe Al got for me online, discounted price.
I want new MAPS, and it is a burr under the saddle for me that they are not offered.
I need more paper maps now than I did years ago. My navigational skills must be deteriorating. SIGHH
Now, if you KNOW for sure that an upgrade contains maps, please feel free to correct me right here on the forum. I can take it!

I have TomTom and have had map updates and they were free. I just plug the TomTom into TomTom Home on the PC and it automatically downloads updates.
MS S&T '08 version. I have had MS S&T since 2005 and buy the new version every year. I have the USB GPS receiver for the MS S&T so the only cost for the new yearly one is about $25. Hope they don't change the software to work with a different receiver!!!!

I update my DeLorme USA annually -- it also helps with my geocaching activities as well as navigation since I use a DeLorme GPS for geocaching. Cost about $40 with shipping.

I've had S&T 02. 06, and 08. So I guess that means every few years. I have seen some map changes, but I think the hold up on maps is with the source authorities, rather than the software publishers.

Every two to three years. I use both Streets and Trips and Garmin's Mapsource.
