RV Fridge Thermositer

I've searched thru posts to find out about my RV fridge. 2018 Montana using Norcold 4 door. Question: Can I unplug the sensor in the fridge to see if it gets colded? Will the fridge still work unplugged? Thanks.

Bob

First. What problem are you having where you need to unplug the thermistor? And yes unplugging it will run the fridge wide open.

Eagleback, /freezer won't get cold enough to freeze ice cream and fridge not always cold enough to keep milk. Temp varies from 38 to 48 sometimes. I've got the four door Norcold and noticed that the flap doesn't close flat and needs to be done manually. I disconnected the sensor and it seems colder now but when outside temps go up not sure it will hold.

if there are issues you should still be under a 3 year warranty...get it to a dealer.

if you take it to a dealer, make sure you document/demonstrate it. Dealers often do not do a good job at troubleshooting

My brand new 2018 3950BR had issues with that refrig flap...dealer fixed it under warranty. I think it's a fairly common problem with those double-door Norcold frig. And even though the flap got fixed and no more air leaks between the doors, our frig keeps everything real cold (I keep it set on 2 or else milk freezes), but the freezer still won't keep ice cream or bread hard. No problem with ice cubees though...strange.

It sound s like you need to improve venting assuming the door isnt the problem. I have 2 after market fans mounted on the top vent blowing out and one fan mounted on the bottom blowing up. and one small fan in the fridge itself blowing across the fins. We live full time in Naples Florida and when the temps are in the 90's were lucky to get the fridge below 38 degrees. place ice cream on the floor of the freezer compartment and that helps keep the ice cream frozen. I am ready to change out this unit to a residential fridge and never go back to an rv fridge again as we live full time.

Eagleback, exactly my temps too. We're down in Bonita Bay and temps have been high. When we get back home I'm going to look into exhaust fans for the outside vents.

I had same door flap problem so I made a small door raising adjustment and applied a small coating of food grade silicon grease to all door rubber seals and around the lower door flap movement .been workin great since.!!!!

First off some things to investigate. While camping, put a very bright flashlight in the freezer and then in the fridge at night, turn out all the lights, let yours eyes adjust and go looking for light escaping around the seals. Some of the Norcold 4 door Rv fridges have bad seals on the bottom doors where they were strapped during shipment and crushed the seal. To replace, you have to replace the doors. I had to do just that. Then 5 months later the fridge kept warming up on the second day of camping to above 45 degrees in the fridge and 34 in the freezer. Turn it off and then back on and it would cool back down. Talked to the service manager and he got on the phone with Norcold and they said two things would cause that in the new style units. The first thing is the thermistor and the second is the insulation around the burner on the back of the fridge. I replaced the thermistor at a cost of $14 and a total of 2 minutes and it has been working as designed since. Hope this may help.

Door flap was our issue as well. Most often something simple.

We also had issues with the door flap hanging up and not allowing the door to close. Had total failure and the hinge on the flap broke and wouldn't work at all. Fashioned a flap out of black duct tape which worked surpisingly well until we could get it to the dealer and they could order and install a new flap under warranty.

My unit has auxiliary cooling fans already installed outside. I confirmed that they worked but found they don't come on until fridge is pretty warm. May look at bypassing the thermal switch and installing a manual one to turn on fans when it is hot outside.
