roof scuff

I found a scuff or scratch in my rubber roof up near the new vent cover installed by my dealer. How the scratch got there is another subject. The question now is "What should be done to protect the roof?"

This scratch is shallow, and does not cut thru the roof membrane. It is about 3 inches long. I am not inclined to do nothing. I am considering covering with EternalBond tape. Is that wise, or is another patch a better approach.

My unit is only 1 year old, so this repair will need to hold many years.

Thanks for your input.

I'd cover it with a piece of Eternabond roofing tape. You can pick up kits at almost any RV service place but it's expensive when you buy it that way. I buy mine from http://bestmaterials.com/roof_repair.aspx and keep a whole roll handy. On my living room slide roof it appeared that the line of screw heads close to the outside panel were wearing through the roofing material so I put three strips of Eternabond the full length of the slide roof, overlapping each strip about 1/2 inch. I also fixed a couple of "scuffs" on my roof the same way with just one short strip. Incidentally, I also placed a strip on the roof where the antenna end rests on the roof just to keep from wearing a spot in the roofing.

Be sure when you go to put the strips on the roof that you clean the area well with just plain rubbing alcohol. Make sure your strip is cut the length you want it and when you get ready to put it down realize that when you stick it down, it sticks! You can't move it!

Thanks for the input. My dealer found the scuff was from the TV antenna when in the down position vibrating and touching the roof. The service tech said to watch it, that the spot doesn't need patching yet. I plan to install a piece of Eternal Bond tape, but first I am having a UV treatment put on the roof the the washing vendor here at my campground.

Happy travels

The white of the roof is just a cosmetic thing and it's only real purpose is appearance and also reflects the suns heat. ALL rubber is black and our roofs are no different. If you could look under the white you will find the black membrane. In short, If you don't see BLACK than I would not be at all concerned and would leave well enough alone. Remember anything you do to your rubber roof could adversely effect your 10 year roof warranty.
