You meet the best people

I had the distinct honor of meeting DQDICK in person yesterday. As it turns out by pure chance we may well be parked side by side when the wife and I join the literally thousands of oilfield workers descending upon Carlsbad,NM.

Dick was extraordinary helpful in addressing some questions I had about both desert camping and our unit in particular.

On a related note, I would strongly recommend that anyone who does not have to be there avoid any of the parks actually in Carlsbad itself for the next several years. They are totally overwhelmed by massive influx of new people. Dick and now I have found the one exception to that rule but it is a park several miles outside of the town. While the area is very interesting, it’s current traffic and congestion make it very dangerous area to transit.

Thanks Jim! I enjoyed meeting you also and will enjoy having you as a neighbor. Truth in advertising dictates that I say other folks opinion of me will vary

Funny Jim. When you said you were going to Carlsbad I knew you were going to run into Dick.

Oh and bit of trivia. If you go to the caverns and see the display for Lechuguilla Cave. I have been in Lech.

Wife and I began our 1st 2 years of this 47 year adventure in Carlsbad NM
Pretty quiet little town in 1971 having moved there from Fayetteville Arkansas
What we both remember most is the time/temperature sign at the bank.
Never saw 105 degrees at 8:00 am before !

What’s happening that’s causing the oil boom.

Interesting that you also left Arkansas for NM. It does get rather toasty there

The oil companies have discovered and learned to recover a massive reserve that Carlsbad sits at center of. Boom does not suffice to describe the level of activity!! It is by far the largest domestic play currently

Jim ,
Thanks for the tip. Our plan for spring was to hit Diamond Crater then work over to Carlsbad! Swing north to Santa Fe and continue north / NE till the fall MOC rally. We will be changing plans!

While we lived in Carlsbad families and friends came to visit. Everyone had to go to the Caverns we made 7 trips in 2 years. Should have been a tour guide!
Make sure you get to Sitting Bull Falls when we were there you had to get a local to draw you a map. Swimming hole at the top ( clothes optional back then) I think that’s all changed now.

I am retiring early 2019 and planning a trip out west, with a stop at Carlsbad for the caverns. Should I rethink that part of the trip? We will be there mid-May.

The park is called the Ranch. If you can reserve a spot there or at the KOA nearby you could visit but I don’t recommend any of the other parks. The area and especially the caverns are interesting but be aware there is a tremendous volume of traffic and activity in the area

The Ranch is on the highway not far from the turnoff to Sitting Bull. I hear there are some side by side trails near there??

Were no side by sides then just old Army surplus Jeeps
Didn’t have the $$ back in those days for toys.
Escapees Ranch was where we were planning to land.

You all should also go to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park while you're in the Carlsbad area. My dad was born and raised at the Smith Ranch which is in the park.
