Help with route to Bryce Canyon National Park

We are leaving for Bryce on May 2nd from Southern CA..
We are considering going I-15 to Hwy 14 near Cedar City UT, to Hwy 89N to Hwy 12 E. What say you seasoned travelers? What about elevation, windy roads, possible chains needed?

Thanks for your help

That is the route we took last Oct. No problems and beautiful scenery.

Russ, no problem with your route to the park. This time of the year you should be good weather wise also, I'm sure you will pay attention to the weather reports. There's a pretty good pull as you leave Cedar City, but no problem for our newer trucks. On Hwy 12 in the Red Canyon area about 25 to 30 miles from Bryce, there are two short tunnels. Again no problem.

A couple of years ago while camped at Rubys in Bryce we met a couple who just bought a new Montana and were going to visit the park. Somebody told them they couldn't get through the tunnel, so they camped in a park near the intersection of hwy 89 and hwy 12 and drove into the park for 3 days, an extra 50 miles each way.

Even though I carry chains, I hope to never use them. Because we travel in the winter months, it makes me feel prepared for a worse case. We have hit a few snowstorms before and we just wait a day or two.

Since you are going to be in the area, check out Zion National Park as well. Really beautiful. Utah has so much to offer. Cedar Breaks, Capital Reef, Arches and Canyon Lands to the east. We are heading to Utah later in May.
