Transmission Problem
This is my 2nd Duramax....never a problem until 2 days ago while towing from Bakersfield, Ca to Stockton. Had been on the road for a little over two weeks. Truck is a 2015 3500 HD Dually and.has 27,000 miles.
Pulled into rest stop, out of truck for 10 minutes. Got back in, started truck and put in gear. Loud clunk and shutter, no movement. Both wife and I thought something preventing the trailer from moving, or problem with hitch. Got out, inspected, no issues found. Got back in truck, re-started it and now check engine light is on. Called On-Star, who said code indicated transmission issue, but driveable with advice to take to dealer for service at earliest opportunity. Put back in gear, drove home with no issues, truck functioned normally. After got home and unhitched trailer, restarted truck and engine light now off.
End of story....took to dealer Monday. Turned out they had to replace "#3 shift solenoid and pressure switch manifold" ....whatever those are. They claim no big deal, will not affect future reliability. We will see......but I thought Allison's were bullet proof.

I am under the impression that "bullet proof" means that you can't break the Allison, not that they don't ever need maintenance- JMHO- Don

It is a surprise to me that one would categorize the solution to this problem as being "maintenance", but I will admit I am a long ways away from being a mechanic.

No need to worry Hunts800 ,I have had 2 Allisons and they are a Very Tough and reliable trans and for sure the 2007 and up BUT they are not Bulletproof and like anything else mechanical they will break if pushed beyond their limits but in your case one came out of the Factory that needs a few "tweeks" to make it right but you should be good to go from now on,I put 200K on my 2004 Allison with no problems and now I have 180K on my 2007 with the only problem was a trans cooler line that blew $45 bucks,go to any Duramax/Allison Forum and they will say the same thing

The Allisons have a built in safety factor. The transmission control module will shut down the ability to shift in anything but a limp mode if a problem is detected. Your light went out after the next self test passed.

Allisons are very tough transmissions. The 3000 and 4000 models are not limited by weight, only by HP and torque...they can tow anything. The 3000 is limited to 450 HP and 1250 ft/lbs of torque. The limits for the 4000 are 650/1950. We used to have a motor home with a 3000 in it, never a problem.

I think around 2010 they opened a regional office and plant in India to meet the needs for the European and Asian market but I think the Allison for the Duramax is still made in the Main plant in Indiana
