Gulf Shores, Alabama

What a day..Made it to Gulf Shores this afternoon, after braving the La. I-10, heavy fog and rain, for 400+ miles from Beaumont, Tx.. After the I-10 La. rockin and rolling ride, I think the DW and I are ready for the meanest bull on the PBR. I swear, I think if I couldn't have hung onto the steering wheel, I would have been launched through the roof of the TV. Saw about 10 cars in the ditch in different places due to the heavy ran and fog. Don't know why, since they were all cars or pickups not towing anything. You would think the average hotrodder would think maybe the road might be slick and the fog might hide that curve. Fortunately, no injuries, just lots of State Troopers.
On the bright side, the Tana must not have noticed the bouncing around, as all the doors and drawers stayed shut, only casualty is the top came loose on the Italian dressing, so no need to shake that baby up. (What a great rig!!!!) We are staying at the Island Retreat RV Park. Have a great site, lots of room in a nice pull-thru on the end of the row. Noticed a couple of other Tanas parked, so will check them out, soon as the weather clears. Now we just have to have a bowl of crawfish etoufee and we will be all set to settle in until the 1st of April. Ya'all take care and enjoy the highways and byeways.

Barb and Bob, we're glad you arrived safely. Gulf Shores has plenty of good eateries so I'm sure you'll enjoy that feature. There are at least two other MOCers in the area and I'm sure they'll be contacting you. Have a great stay!

Hi Barb and Bob - Is there still a lot of storm damage in the area, or are things starting to come back togather down there. My DW and I headed that direction last Sept got as far as Tunic, Miss. stayed four days at Sam's Casino parking. We were getting ready to head further south and we had a lot of Rver's tell us - we would be wasting our time going further south as everything was still tore up and very depressing... So we cancelled out planned venture. Let us know how things are going down there. safe travels John

Glad you all made it across I-10 making it to your destination safe and sound. Always nice not to have any mishaps inside Monty other than the dressing lid. That road is horrible! When we traveled it in '03 we had dishes on the floor but nothing broke just a chip on one bowl - that new suspension must do a lot with the ride of rear kitchens. Enjoy all the good eats and your stay.

Glad you guys made it. I think the Oklahoma City N.-W. bypass is almost as bad. Try Lulu's there. We stayed at your park across from the swimming pool. Have a great time there.

John, Gulf Shores is pretty much back to normal. We were here two weeks after the big hurricane a couple of years ago and it was a mess. Things have really turned around. I hear that the state park in Gulf Shores is really nice, and they now have full hookups and charge only $300 a month fo nice sites. Haven't hada chance to check it out, but everybody tells me it is great. Also there is another luxury rv park that just openned. Will check things out and let folks know. When we got back to the Tana, after enjoying a great meal of fish and gumbo, found a note from Vicki and Steve Reigle, so will be giving them a call.

Ozz, glad you and Sue have found the sand and sea, enjoy it to the max..

Safe and happy travels to all of you wonderful MOC folks.

Sorry we missed you, Barb and Bob. We'd been out to the beach and the hike to Gator Lake and thought we'd stop and say hi since we were going by on 180. We'll be here until Friday morning, so if you get a chance we'd like to meet you.

John and Donna (OntMont) are in Gulf State Park right now but leaving in a day or two. We toured the park. John told me all the sites used to be surrounded by tall shrubs, giving each site a lot of privacy. Unfortunately, all that shrubbery is now gone. I understand there are plans to replace at least some of it but it's not happened yet. Still, it's the first state park I've ever seen that has full hookups at all (or nearly all) sites. Now, if it just had cable and wifi we'd be interested.

We're touring other rv parks because we think we might winter here one of these years. Rrheik, do you have any info about that new park? Is that the one named Luxury RV Park in Gulf Shores or is there another? Thanks.

Hey to all of you MOCers in the Gulf Shores area. We are at the Escapees Park in Summerdale. Maybe we can have an unofficial rally before everyone leaves. We will be here at least a week, maybe longer.

Pam ... we're getting together with the Reikings today. Mr. and Mrs. Ontmont left this morning. We're leaving Friday morning and have filled up the day tomorrow, but tomorrow evening is free. PM or email me and maybe we can work something out.

Steve, I looked at Luxury RV yesterdeay, it appeared to be a bit crowded, sites pretty narrow. I thi nk I owuld opt for Island Retreat or the State Park. Haven't checked your's out yet. We will definitely be coming back next winter and will probably stay here at Island Retreat. See you in a couple of hours.

The state park is quite nice now, and will get better. It is not like it used to be, but there are viewable sunsets, more birds and less bugs, so that is some consolation.

We travelled I-10 to Beaumont today. All I can say is that it is much better than it was a couple of years ago, and they were working to fix the remaining rough sections. We also had our TrailAir pin box and Equaflex suspension, so that may have helped some too. That said, thae bad bits were really bad, mostly around Lake Charles, and into Beaumont. The two Flying J's on I-10 were terrible, very tight and congested, poorly signed. We almost always get our fuel at FJ, but these two must older sites and need some upgrading.

We are spending the night at Gulf Coast RV in the Beaumont area, and then on to the RGV.

There is a new campground in the Foley area, that has all the bells and whistles. It is brand new, and looks it, a bit closely spaced for our taste, but it looks like it will be good place in the future. (Just found the brochure), it is "Magnolia RV Park". It is in Magnolia Springs, off 98 at the corner of Lipscomb Rd and Mannich Lane. 13381 Manich Lane, Telephone 251-747-4116. $300/month.

Donna and John, have a safe journey. Sorry we missed you. Hope the Gulf Coast RV park has dried out. Glad you made it to Beaumont, rest of the trip should be smooth sailing. Had a great afternoon with Vicki and Steve yesterday, what a great couple. Tonight dinner with Vicki, Pam, Steve, and Bob. There are just no better folks than MOC people. You folks take care.
