Shuttle Launch

I read in the local paper NASA scheduled a shuttle launch for this Thursday. Told DW about and she said Lets Go! Called Manatee Park asked if they had any space and was told my rig might be too big. I was told they would scope out the park to see if the available sites were big enough for my rig and if the road to it was navigateable for a rig my size. Got a call back this afternoon informing me they have a site for me...Wahoo! Will leave Wed and return Sunday.

Is it a day or night launch? We are at Clearbrook rv resort workcamping in Clermont Fl. so should be able to see it. Saw last years from Port Richey so this one will be a lot closer. Dan

One of the perks of living on the East coast. I envy you. If we ever make it over there that's something I would sure like to see. That and the Navy Museum in Pennsecola Fl. It's just very hard to get away from the West coast.

Foggyb, you should have a good "seat" from where you are at Clerbrook. Depends on what Tee you're on!! Dennis

I am checking on getting as close as possible (not with the Montana - just a vehicle. Checked on tours. They want a lot of money, but can get you "closer than the press".

Anyone have directions on getting a good viewing spot with a vehicle only (pickup)?

We watched right from the Space Center last year.. It was one of the most awesome experiences we have had.. We had to go back twice because the first one was scrubbed at the 5 minute countdown.. It was a night launch (9:45) and we didn't get home back to Clemont until after 2:00 AM because of all the traffic.. It was worth every minute of it just being there...

While you are waiting you can watch the astronauts drive out to the pad and there are many other astronauts that have been up there before that tell you everything that is going on behind the scenes..

Just FYI though, we went a day early and took the tour through the entire complex (they don't do this on launch day). The admission ticket is good for two days or until launch so we spent one day touring, the next day waiting for the launch and since it was scrubbed, we went back a few days later for the lift off... I just can't describe how awesome it was to be there..

Joe-N-Doe, if you are going to Manatee Hammock Park be careful, there are a lot of trees with low hanging branches and the roads are narrow, a weekend there cost me a new roof for my Montana. Manatee Hammock is across the river in Titusville from Patrick AFB Manatee Park. We are fortunate to be able to step out on the front porch to watch the launches.

I think it was just under $40.00 each... Try http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/launches/index.asp
and read the instructions very carefully...

I agree with Helen about touring the space center. We spent a whole day there and it wasn't enough. If you are in Florida, this is a must. I have no desire to go back to Florida (been there many times) except to visit the space center again and of course, Key West.
Happy trails................................

I'll be sure to give Jimmy a hug from you, Sue. We will be going there for a few days later this winter.

Dave,

Here is a link to a site that provides info on viewing any launch http://www.launchphotography.com/Shu...h_Viewing.html

Old GI,

I hear you...Several others who have reviewed the CG have expressed concern as well. When I spoke with the park rep yesterday she was concerned our rig was too big to navigate the park. She even cited complaints from some RV'ers. When she called back several hours later she was sure we would have no problems.

Try The RV Park in Christmas Fl 10 Miles west of I 95 on SR 50. Have spent about 8 years there it was an Airstream Park untill this year. Can handle big rigs and is a short drive to the Space center. First launch I saw was John Glenn going for his second flight. I am sure you will be impressed with the launch. The phone number for the Park is 407-568-5207

Just bought tickets for the shuttle launch. We will be at Kennedy Space Center for $40. Actually this is a 2 day ticket. One day is the shuttle launch viewing, the second day is a full tour within 14 days. We are looking forward to it.
