Air lift system

Is a air lift system necessary on a DRW for 2285 pin weight.

We have a BS382RL and tow it with an F350 DRW and do not have or need air bags. Tow just like our old 3400RL.

A call only one can make, but I love my truck with its rear. Joh

We didn't need them, but put them in and like the ability to tow perfectly level.

Same here. Just put mine on last week with on-board air. Towed first time today and really liked the ride. I went with Air Lift brand and really liked the quality better than the Firestones I had on a previous Ram.

I would check for sag first, then make a decision to use them. My SRW sagged something fierce, so I went with airbags so that if I ever drove at night while towing my headlights didn't turn into highbeams. This helped a lot with I became a professional tower and found myself driving at night more often than not (trying to stay on schedule).

The sag may not be so bad on a DRW but they certainly won't hurt. On my SRW they really improved the ride, too. My truck configured with my current hitch meant I had to use Firestone since the Air Ride couldn't be installed with the underside hitch parts.

I also put them on, and for much the same reasons as Dick, David, and Art. In addition, with my on-board air and being able to adjust from the cab I have changed my air pressure while going down the road. I have found that it helps the ride for certain road conditions if more/less air is in my bags.

I also have a DRW F450 and didn't "need" them. I just like the truck to sit nice an level while I am towing and it did seem to smooth the ride out a bit while towing. Most notable is bridge and overpass transition/expansion joints. They don't seem to jar the truck like they did before the Firestone air bags. -Glenn

I have DRW and no airbags. Bed sits a little high when empty, but level when Monty is on-board. My pin weight is over 3000, hence the DRW rated at 4000 extra rear axle weight.

I just installed the newer Airlift Ultimate 5000 bags...these are very similar to the old style 5000s but have an internal jounce bumper to limit any bottoming out you may experience if running with minimal air pressure. Airlift swapped them for free, just sent them my 4 year old bags and they sent me the new ones!
I have custom rear leafs with no overload spring so I needed the bags for carrying the weight. Works great, I have a better ride empty and still no problem towing nice and level.
The rear Hellwig "Big Wig" stabilizer bar seems to help too, very nice piece!

I have about 3200 lbs of pin weight. Brochure says 2200 lbs. My '12 Ram DRW has the "overload" spring leaf. The pads they contact are 2 1/2" and 4" from the overload spring when empty.

This gives me a very good ride empty, but about 3-4" of squat when loaded.

I just ordered a set of Air Lift 5000 bags with the wireless compressor. Will get them installed in a few days.

Jim
