We are happy to be on the road on our 1st long trip with our 08 Montana. We are in Oregon and going to Elma, Washington and then over to Mt. Rushmore by way of I-90. That is providing the weather cooperates! Does anyone have suggestions on what else to see along the way?

After South Dakota we are heading for our 1st Montana Rally in Indiana in September and then down to So. Illinois for Bob's 45th High School Class Reunion for Carmi High!

This might be too time-consuming but one of the oddest places I've encountered off I-90, 5 miles east of the Idaho/Montana border is the Route of the Hiawatha Trail. This is a very shallow continuous downhill running and biking trail created from a former Train Route. The rails and ties were removed for cyclists, hiker/runners and in some areas, vehicles. There are dozens of tunnels and tressles that were built to keep the grade consistent when it was an active train route.

DW and I were able to drive some of this in case you don't want to bike or jog the road. There are a couple of CGs off the I-90 but I forget the exact locations and distance. It's way too much to describe but here's a couple of links to start:

If you want to cycle the 2% downhill grade, there is a shuttle service for some of it that you can arrange to bring you back up. Don't forget the camera. Besides the possibilities of moose and deer we saw in the distance the scenery is fantastic.

If you're into history, there's the Little Bighorn Battlefield of Custer fame. I-90 actually straddles the battlefield area. It's in Montana, a little before you get into Wyoming. The nearest "towns" are Crow Agency and Garryowen. We stayed at a KOA (one of the few we have liked) just north of Hardin, MT. There's also an rv park near Garryowen that others have recommended.

If you go through the area that Steve was talking about -- the Battle of the Little Bighorn --- there is a very nice CG just a few miles south of the park. The name is 7th Calvary or something like that. It sits on the side of a hill and you can look north and see the Little Bighorn monument area.

There is also the Devils Tower Monument area. Nice KOA right at entrance to park.

Don't miss stopping in Wall SD. Plan on spending a few hours at least. I believe there is a CG right there too.

We also enjoyed the Crazy Horse Monument being built near Mt. Rushmore, the Needles Highway, and Custer State Park with the buffalo and prairie dogs. Oh yeah, a trip to Deadwood is also nice!

The RV park south of the little bighorn battlefield is called 7th Ranch RV Camp we stayed there last night...very nice people, they even escort you to your site and direct you into your site. The battlefield was interesting too

Newby here. We just bought our Montana Mountaineer yesterday! Bob, I see you graduated from Carmi. My husband and I graduated from Vienna High, just a bit north of Carmi. Of course you know how beautiful Southern Illinois is. There are several wineries there now, so a winery tour is nice.
