I normally don't use super singles on any of my tractors. But the ride is really nice. Interesting fun fact. Michelin is about the only manufacture that will post a weight chart and air pressure chart. I run 75 psi in them and that is good for 5500lbs a tire. I can run 120psi and I'm good to 11,000 lbs a tire. Just in case I decide to load the entire garage into the monty lol.

Did you do enough modifications to have it recertified as an RV?

From several threads on devoted forums I have seen anywhere from 7-13 mpg. Most of the HDT owners are pulling much heavier 5ers than Montana's.

Ah shoot. I hoped no one would mention the super singles as opposed to dualies because that argument has no end. It's OK to talk about tires as long as you don't mentioned them on this forum....

You will probably still have some guys here tell you you don't have enough truck.

That is surely the way to go. There are a few MDTs around here and then a growing number of HDTs seen as well. I'm not being a @$$, but but coming from someone who has been there and being asked on several occasions during the process, if you ever have the infamous aluminum frame break with the splitting of the sidewall under the left front slide, Montana will deny the warranty claim if hauled by an MDT or larger. As some of you know, mine came loose in the fall of '16 and by the time I got the factory to respond, it took 7 months to get it handled. During that time I was asked on several occasions what kind of tow vehicle I used. After about the fifth time, I blew up at the warranty people on the phone and asked WHY they kept asking that question and was told that the frame would not be warrantied if pulled by a larger truck. Keep in mind, this was three years ago and many have been repaired by them since. Just wanted to mention this in case it happens to you. I hope that by now someone has challenged them on this. It is one of the questions that I plan on asking at the fall rally.

I like your truck, I have 2010 Ram 2500hd with 65gal fuel tank under truck. Had to put that in by myself too. Man! people are hard to find to work on your stuff.

We just left the HDT space this last year.

Was running an auto shift volvo 610, singled long with a bed setup for hauling smart car or atvs; registered as an RV.

Previous to our Montana the toyhauler had a pin weight of 4500lbs; it was a bit much for the pickup. Now that we have the Montana the annoyance of the HDT wasn't really worth it once we were onsite (driving around in an HDT when empty isn't optimal).

For those looking to go the HDT route; look for a volvo 730 in an auto. Mid height and a two pedal, they are a really nice setup once you get them singled out. Definitely overkill for any Montana, but they are nice on the open road.

I have a question about your tires. When these single wheel tires came out for the heavy trucks I thought truckers would flock to them. Why hasn’t that happened?

Once I get my unit hooked up I will take a photo and post. I concur, a new truck and cost wasn't doing it for me. I have a very good friend who was selling a 2010 Freightliner Mountain Master conversion, 19,500 GVWR, 59,800 miles with 6.7 Cummins, Eaton Fuller 6 speed, and many other goodies for $63,000 - didn't need that much truck but couldn't pass it up.

MLH.... I drive semi (30yrs plus), from my perspective on the tire...when they 1st came out with them they was touted as "LFR" tires, meaning "Low Friction and Resistance". When I pulled semi dump trailer, we had them for a lower tare weight on the combined unit. It was about 1000# lighter total on tare. It was good for "regional" type hauling, not over the road,IMHO.

Downfalls of the "super singles"...When you have a blowout/flat tire, you are stuck right where it happens at. If it occurs at highway speed, alot of times it damages the rims they are mounted on, thus needing replaced with the tire.

On standard duals... if you have a blowout/flat, a lot of times you can "limp" somewhere to get it repaired, and if not loaded or have a very light load, it can be singled out, until you make it back to home terminal for cheaper repair bill from a road service company.

Yep, The tires were originally designed for better fuel economy and were lighter. So people that are super weight conscience use them. Bulk haulers where they get paid by the weight they haul etc. Cost per mile never made it such that is was worth switching over.

Added a 42 gallon fresh water tank to the rear and plumbed in a motor to pump it. When I need water I can transfer it to the 5th wheel. Steel is coming today to start the bed.

Okay going to be brave and throw out what may be seen as a stupid question. I see the hitch sits a ways back from the rear wheels. Won't that make the the 5th wheel act more like a bumper pull for tracking and backing up? wouldn't it be better if it were over the rear wheels?

Okay 2 stupid questions .

From looking at his photos, the hitch is mounted where it should be IF he had left it a tandem drive power unit. Chances are that he can't move it forward over the center of the axle due to the nose of the coach potentially hitting the sleeper. It could also be the frame behind the hitch, if centered over axle may hit front storage compartment.

Im not certain thats the issue, without measurements, but thats how it appears in the photos.

He could mount the hitch anywhere he wonted to. Pulling a fifth wheel with this tractor is like a flea on an elephant’s butt.
