Thanks everyone for the food for thought and thanks for the clarification on the purpose of air bags. I am waiting to hear back from a local suspension shop on adding helper springs and air bags. My mind is not yet convinced I want to go through putting a bit overweight trailer on my truck even after modifying the suspension. I'll have to chew on it some more....

Why live on the fringes. If you get anyone's 350 or 3500 drw you want have to worry about anything.I installed airbags on my ram on account of the 3480 pounds of pin weight [21.5] percent of my 16200 pound trailer plus 60 gallons of extra fuel and very heavy hensley ts3 airbag hitch. I'm 200 pounds over on my Montana at 16,200 pounds. I'm 800 pounds below the gcwr of 27,000 pounds which is the most important weight for liability purpose's. You can be illegal and most likely get by but if you are ever in an accident and it's not your fault, if the other guy gets an attorney then you could possibly have some liability that you would otherwise not have.Be sure to stay below the GCWR if possible.

IMO, I'd stay within truck manufacturer specs...look at a lighter trailer or a bigger truck.
Good advice, over weight is over weight. Anybody hauling a big Montana with a 250/2500 series truck is living on the edge.
