We had a member on the forum a few years ago that was able to do the math that showed the dully was more stable.

I try to weigh mine once a year because they seem that we gain weight over time - we meaning me and the 5er. I added the front wheels and back weight of the truck together and just to make sure it is below 11,500 GVWR of my 1 ton diesel. When I exceed that weight I will be looking for Dual Rear Wheel Truck.

Well said Wes, and probably more truthful than we even like to admit. I've pulled plenty of overloaded trailers in the past because that's what I had to work with. When I changed from the 250 SRW to the 350 DRW it's because I could, and I knew the new vehicle would fully meet our needs well into future. I would still vote for SRW for a daily driver, but as long as we're pulling and living with a 5er this size we'll have the DRW. And looking cool is the best reason to buy

Buy what you want and or can afford. I had the truck first. I have the exact trailer and pull it with a 2007 Chevy 2500 duramax. 4 door short box. So far have had no issues and no problem pulling. Probably would have or should have went one ton but this one is paid for and I don't have to mess with these diesel additives.

We pulled our Montana 3100RL with a 2001 Dodge CTD 2500 6 speed with exhaust brake and air bags for 3 years and over 35,000 miles from California to New Hampshire and Florida multiple times. After about 200,000 miles, the old girl finally gave up and we traded her for a '16 3500 dually. The new one obviously pulls and stops better and my wife drives it while she would not drive the old truck. On the Cat Scale North of Tucson the new rig, truck and trailer, weighed roughly 1,000 lbs more than the old one.

With the old truck, we were on the edge of its capacity but were never concerned about pulling, stopping ability or stability. Through the mountains on I-70 west of Denver, we sometimes were going pretty slow and the trailer brakes would get a little hot, but we always made it, just not as fast as some would like. The new truck has nearly twice the power and torque and it shows. The auto transmission makes it very easy to drive and stop. I won't tell anyone they have to have a dually to pull a fiver but I would not go back to a 3/4 ton truck myself.

RV newbies.........we bought a '16 3150 legacy package Monty that we have yet to tow for the first time as we own a tax/accountant business that is currently consuming our time. Our maiden voyage is schedule for the first week in May to VA to visit our son and daughter in law. Have wrestled with the tow vehicle acquisition and by luck was able to buy a used 2013 Chevy Silverado SRW 2500 diesel with only 5,000 miles on it. I decided to put a rear helper spring on the truck as well as air bags to accommodate the weight. Would be interested in anybodys thought on the matter.

My thoughts, if you want an honest answer is that anybody using a 3/4 ton truck to haul a 16,000 lb RV is over weight.

The '16 referred to in my post is a 2016 unit. The weight specs on that trailer is much less than 16,00.

You are looking at the empty weight. 16k is the GVWR...which is where you will eventually be, if not there now.

Being that this is the Montana Owner's Club Forum then we can only assume that you are referring to a Montana 5th-wheel and all 2016 Montanas have a GVWR of 16k+.

If this truck will be used for other things don't get a dually. For what you are talking about just get a 3/4.

Yep keep looking and at least get a 1 TON SRW,I prefer Duallies because of my pin weight and stability but a SRW will do for vacationers IMO

Based on the responses, I had a hunch I was flirting with weight limitations hailung a 3160 Monty with a 3/4 ton Chevy Diesel pick up. Knowing at the moment I don't have the extra dollars to upgrade trucks, I did do a modification to the current truck installing Firestone airbags and an additional helper spring on each side of the rear of the truck.

I feel that you cannot have too much truck. Wife and I have been towing since 1966 and now have the best set up of all the rigs in our past.

That won't help. You're going to have to break down and get a truck that can handle the weight.

Had both.. Drw if the pin weight is over 2700 lbs... Put a gen in the bed, tool box or whatever. Srw advantage is when tires are needed, only 4, not 6..

Ron, Look at the door jam and see what the GAWR and the GVWR is. Take your truck and trailer to a scale, (truck stop, etc) and get your weights. The weights listed on the door jam are the LEGAL max weight of your truck. Air bags, extra leaf's only make a overloaded truck sit level.
