Coincidentally, I was asked "what would it take for me and my husband to use your "trailer" for a little weekend getaway?", just last week. I even surprised myself when, a split second after finishing the question, I replied with an emphatic, "I would never even consider it". I think my response kind of surprised her as well because of the look on her face. She dropped that line of questioning immediately. Later on I began to ponder her question and my response and wondered if I might have been too abrupt with her, after all she and her husband are good friends. She even told me that they had been considering buying a travel trailer but had been reluctant about "jumping" into something financially, that they later might regret. I even thought about pulling the 5er out to a nearby campground, setting it up, and letting them enjoy it for the weekend thereby eliminating the possibility of a traffic accident on their part. Then, I thought about it a little more, and even discussed it with DW. When I told her I was "thinking about it", she looked at me like I had a duck on my head. I looked at her and said, "you're right". Even if I did let them use my Montana and they did like it enough to go out and buy a travel trailer, they'd never be satisfied unless they bought a Montana anyway.....so I'm actually doing them a favor. No, I won't let anyone use my Montana or my Truck. My wife doesn't drive it so no one else is gonna drive it either. I would let my adult children stay in it if they visited, but other than that, no. I don't feel bad about it anymore either. That went away after a few hours. I think it says "MOC Enthusiast" or something on my MOC banner, but my wife would call me "Rabid". I love my Montana and my truck, and I've worked very hard to have both. It's not that I don't trust anyone else, it's just that I don't TRUST ANYONE ELSE! (except maybe one of ya'll if it came right down to it)

NO way - we worked hard for what we have.
No one would take care of it like we do.

The kids grew up camping in a Coleman pop up trailer with us as a family and enjoyed every minute of it thru their high school years. But they know now not to ask to use our fifth wheel and truck - they know what the answer would be.

No to both questions. I won't even share my tools. The quickest way to ruin a friendship or a family relationship is to get something you care about torn up. Wether it happens by accident, stupidity or it would have happened anyway. You'll always blame them and feel you shouldn't have loaned it to them. Better to say no up front.

Hi

here is where the Montana is sitting today.

Here is where I normally store it on the concrete pad between the poles of the old pole barn.

It's next to the house while I do some maintenance.

Both locations have electric and water.

We actually had someone ask if they could borrow our truck and rig to go on vacation....guess my look said it all as they acknowledged it was a pretty dumb question.... just imagine the phone call to the insurance company trying to explain that...I could just hear the entire room laughing and asking "you did what?

Sue drives Bigboomer as much as possible and is getting better backing up...now I no longer sit white knuckled riding shotgun....I can actually take a nap!

Would never let someone borrow our rig, but did haul it to a campground so our son and his new bride could have a bit of time away after their wedding.

My feelings as well. Interesting questions.

Absolutely no on both counts. It's not a hotel, it's our home that we worked way too hard for. There is a learning curve to owning and using these rigs. To me, it would like someone asking to use my toothbrush.

LOL! I just can't imagine how someone thinks they can just get in and drive a 40' trailer around and be just fine. Even if they used to have one, they obviously don't now and are out of practice.

I tried that one too! Problem is I can't get people to believe a 40' trailer only sleeps two. I've even thought of telling them since I have a front living room, that the slides wouldn't allow for the extra weight of hide-a-beds!

Thanks for these posts. I have often wondered about this and how I would handle this type of request.

Year before last when the fires in Bastrop county Tx. burned 34000 acres and 1600 homes my son and his wife lost every thing, we moved my rig to a location he picked out so they could have a place to live while sorting things out. I am real glad I had this trailer for them to use until they found a new home. My daughter in law's comment was--she had to go outside to change her mind. They were glad when they were able to move into their own place. Would I loan them my truck and trailer? Probably not. Would I loan it /them to anyone else--Nope.

The insurance coverage aspect alone is more than adequate reason to say NO- I would never ask to use someone's equipment and feel it would be rather "cheeky" to do so- JMHO- Don

We would never let someone take the Montana and truck together. That being said it's not a good move to let your home be used as a motel. We did it twice and I am still regretting it. The first time we set it up at a campground for our niece and her new husband. At the end of the week the rear day/night shade was so buggered that even when it was straightened out it was never the same. The 2nd and last time was for my sister-in-law and husband. They brought their 2 big dogs with them for 2 weeks. I will never get that dog smell out and it has been almost 2 years!! I can smell it especially on humid days and it makes my heart sink. It is not the same as letting someone stay in a cottage or vacation home. While the Montanas are well built, we baby our "Casa" because we want it to last a long time. It is a 2006 and is still in relatively good condition (not counting the dumb graphics). My advice is don't do it!!
