Carrying capacity diferences??

I was just looking at the specs for the 2005 Montanas and I noticed that after the first 3 categories (all weights) that they could have saved space. But the carrying capacity really puzzled me. I am getting the 3400RL, dry wt~11,380#, Pin wt~1,770. The 3295 is dry wt~10,360#, Pin wt~2,300#. However, the 3400's carrying capacity is 2,390#, while the 3295's is a whopping 3,940# ~ a difference of 1,550#! That almost an TON of extra stuff! Could someone please explain this phenomenon to me? There must be an embarrassingly simple answer that I am missing.

The number that is missing is the GVWR, the max weight the Montana is rated to weigh with everything onboard. For the 3295RK the GVWR is 14,300. For the 3400RL the GVWR is 13,770. Back in '03 the brochures showed GVWR. Now you have to calculate it by adding UVW and Carrying Capacity. The sticker inside a kitchen cabinet may show GVWR for yours. Ours does but then ours is an '03 and it may have changed like the brochure.

Hope this answers your question. If not, post back.

Steve, why would the 3400 be 530 lbs less GVWR? Does it have anything to do with the extra 2' 3" the 3400 has? And I still don't see how they can have a total of 1,550 lb difference in CC? Has to be some more calculations involved. The pin weight is quite a bit higher in the 3295, so it would seem logical that you would want to load LESS in something that has a much higher pin wt? I am sure there is a logical explanation.

When we are at the rally in Sept. I will try and remember to ask the montana people what the difference is. Some one remind me to remember.

Ron, I'd appreciate a report back when you find out. I don't have a clue as to how these things are actually figured. Would you also ask how GVWR is determined? Thanks.

This is just a WAG, but I think it boils down to the 6000# axles. That's 12K on the wheels and a pin weight of 1770#. The trailer GVWR is 13770.
12000
+1770
13770
The axles and pin weight are determining the GVWR. The materials that comprise each trailer determine the gross dry weight(3400=11380). Therefore, the more construction material and lighter pin weight equals less carry capacity on the axles.

Found something interesting. If you go down toward the bottom where it tells about keystones new site. Go to the keystone site and at the top right is a customer service tab. Click on it and scroll down to FAQ. There is a answer on there about the different gvwr and all and tells how they come up with some of them.

The direct url is http://www.keystonerv.com/faq.pdf

Interestingly it says
"GVWR is equal to or greater than the sum of the Unloaded Vehicle Weight plus the Net Carrying Capacity."
Note the "or greater than." Ours says 14,300 on the sticker so I guess that's the number for ours.

Ken, we had a similar discussion about axles and pinweight and how that seems to add up to the GVWR but I'm not sure whether GVWR was originally determined by adding axle rating to estimated pinweight or whether estimated pinweight was determined by taking GVWR and subracting axle ratings?? I think the newer units with the Dexter axles have 7,000 lb axles. Maybe some members with the Dexters could look at GVWR on the sticker in the kitchen cabinet and tell us what GVWR it shows and what model they have. It would be interesting to see if those with Dexter axles have 1,000 lbs more GVWR than the same model, prior year, with the AlKo 6,000 lb axles. That might tell us something about the calculations and whether the axle or the frame is the limiting factor for GVWR.
