Black particals in shower

When showering the other day, small black particals came out of the shower head for several seconds- Has any other MOCers experienced this? I flush the hot water heater annually- The debris is normally calcium- Are we going to need a service call? Enlighten me- THANX in advance for any knowledge you care to share- Don

One source of those particles can be a new filter that comes with carbon in it. They need to be flushed for a few minutes to clear the loose parts out. I hope it is that simple.

Or it could be manganese flakes letting loose from CG piping. Happens in my stick house once in a while and looks like pepper. Manganese is not regulated as a health risk, but can cause odors - and black stuff in the fixtures.

I forgot to flush out a new filter when we changed it and the same thing happened.I could not figure out what in the world had happened till I went outside and saw the old filter on the picnic table..

I guess that is why the manufacture tell us to rince off the filter with cold water before installing.
I'm glad I read this post, if that happens to me I'll know just what to do.
