Guadalupe Mountains National Park

We've never been to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and will be pretty close to it on our way to Alabama from Southern California. I wonder if any of you have ever been there and can pass on any information. I know the RV campground is a parking lot for 19 RV's.

Carlsbad Caverns is north of here, and we've been there, done that. Anything else in the area piqued anyone's interest?

Thanks in advance!

We stopped at the vistor's center on our way from Tucson to back east several years ago. They have parking space for RVs at the center. It was interesting and a nice break but didn't see anything beyond the vistor's center. I do suggest you take the north bypass through El Paso instead of I-10 if you are coming that route. I think the highway number is 340{?) or close or close to that number. Nice road and you have a nice view of El Paso from the top. Not any bad grades on it.

We visited the park while we stayed in Carlsbad in the fall. It is an interesting park in regards to the HDQ--on how people lived here in the early days of settlers. We hiked the McKintrick Canyon trail and enjoyed it. A fairly flat hike. It is one of those national parks with most of its sights are deep in the park and require hiking. Since it is in the desert, I would not visit in the summer.

White Sands National Monument is north of there. It is out of the way, but it is one of those uniquue places. No camping at the monument, but plenty in Alamogordo or Oliver Lee state park. There is a lot of history in that area. Ft. Seldon, Lincoln, Three Rivers Petroglyph site, Valley of the Fires, the solar observatory, Riudoso, Three Rivers has cheap camping for seniors with the federal pass. I volunteered a month at Ft. Seldon and enjoyed every minute--well almost every one.

Yes, there is camping in the National Park there, we were going to stay there, boondocking, until we heard the weather reports, they were expecting 80 MPH winds. Seriously! So, that is something to pay attention.

Here is a blog I wrote about a similar situation, very near by. Picture is worth a - - -

Also, steep grade either side to GUMO. When we visited in late summer, it was quite hot and I boiled over when I shut the truck down - wasn't thinking to keep the engine running and the heater on...

The road north of El Paso is 375, Woodrow Bean Mountain Hwy. Again, if my 04.5 Duramax can make the grade yours surely can. Pretty drive and 'maybe' a short cut if I-10 is backed up. Just another thing to do on your long trip if you have time.

Thanks to all for the information.

Now the question becomes "is it worth seeing?"

We used to travel with another couple- A museum would take me hours but my buddy would be done in minutes- Bottom line is everyone is not interested in the same thing at the same level of intensity- JMHO- don

Should you have occasion to go north to Roswell, NM don't miss the museum. Most people go there for the flying saucer stuff. On that I don't care, but the museum has the best collection of Conquistador relics, indian and native people artifacts and cowboy stuff I've ever seen in one place. The also have a great art section and Godard's laboratory and other interesting stuff. http://roswellmuseum.org

I spent quite a bit of time in El Paso and we just went through there this spring. El Capitan is great in the morning. You may want to consider staying at Mission RV in El Paso and doing day trips up the mountain. They are a Passport America park, so it was half price. Unfortunately, when we came through this year we re making a bee line for the dentist for Terrie. We spent two days getting her healed up.

Forgot the last half of your question. North of White Sands is the VLA (Very Large Array) and Pie Town. Very good pie, by the way.
