Why does hot water sink?

I need some expert adivse. When taking a shower and closing the shower head to conserve water, one gets just a trickle - that instantly turns cold. You turn the shower back on and all the hot water sinks back to the bowels of the earth. WHY? Any one have any idea on how to avoid the cold shock when turning the shower back to full power (besides standing out of the way...)

Icehouse,
Welcome to RVing. Just a fact of life in an RV. Stand out of the way for a few seconds and your hot water is back. We've had 3 different 5ers and they have all been the same.
Happy trails...........................

Agree with Sue & Ed...We just learned to adjust to it. Turn the shower head back on facing away from you until it gets warm again. This is our third fifth wheel and all have been the same when it comes to the shower water.

Ditto on that,

Tis the way it is. One of those "round the campfire" stories/discussions.

After a while you won't even realize you are doing the cold water shuffle!

I took another route to the cold water. We have a 3000Rk, and the back of the shower is accessible from the entry way closet. I put a check valve on the hotwater side, and pieces the foam pipe insulation on the hot water line every where that I could reach it. That helped, but didn't totally solve it. Now, when I close the valve at the shower head, I lower the wand to the floor, and you only get a very small shot of cold water.
I talked to Charles Wade about it at the Buellton rally, and he suggested that I buy a better shower valve. Bill

Icehouse, I have added the "Oxygenics" showerhead, and bypass the built in plastic loop that holds the hose. When I turn the shower head off I place the head on the floor until I'm ready for it again, then turn it on while on the floor until the hot water flows again. I always use it as a hand held as I feel I use less water this way....Just my take on the same problem.....You only forget it once or twice while it is hanging, then you learn real fast. Right???

We did the Oxygenics shower head too. Love it! Our other fifth wheel doesn't have the cold water blast when resuming water flow. But, since my other fifth wheel is in Georgia and I'm in Alaska, I can't hop over to it and see what's different. But, I'll definitely give a plug to the Oxygenics shower head anyday!

It took me three trips out to discover how to remove the shower head cord from that blasted plastic loop. I had anticipated just slitting it and making it a semi-removable holder loop, but then I discover how to remove the whole hose.

Drove me crazy.

xthread,
Thanks for some direction. I have been RVing for 20 years, and the Montana is the worst thus far, especially since my shower is directly above the H2O heater. I am sure there is some modification, I will keep you posted on my progress.

Don't know what the difference between your '07 3400RL and my '07 3075RL is, but I get that cold burst in mine.

Jack,
I did purchase another holder only because the one in the RV is too tall for my wife and she could not get her face out of the water. The shower head does fit in the RV holder - loosely, but it will work. Also, I did go to ACE Hardware and purchased a Chrome shutoff valve. The shower head adjusts from very low pressure to high pressure, but does not completely shutoff since the shower head is designed for a stick house.

I bet it does it when it gets really cold. Every fifthwheel we've had does it, including this '07. But I hardly noticed it during warm weather. Now that it's cooler, it's pretty obvious.
