In Michigan, you buy the trailer plate one time and it's good for the life of the trailer. Unfortunately, it is not transferable in any way, so if you buy a new trailer, you throw the old plate away. The plate for our new Montana cost $880. I'm not sure what the truck plate costs as I get four different vehicle plates at the same time. Total for all four was $523, and I think the truck was somewhere around $160 of that. Car insurance for all four vehicles is around $2,700 a year with full coverage on all.

I believe California was the first state to start basing their license plates on the value of the vehicle, and their plates are very expensive.

Just registered our 2013 trailer in its 2nd year, cost $1500. Truck due in March, probably about $600.

We use SD. No personal property tax, no state income tax, no inheritance tax.
