Speed Tweak for Wndows XP

After reading Rich's post about Verizon's speed tester, located here:

http://infospeed.verizon.net/

I decided to tweak the network settings on our laptops to increase the speed. We use the KPC650 with the KR1 router conected wirelessly to two laptops and an HP printer.

Go to this website (it's okay - it's from DSLReports) and click on the file named DRTCP021.exe

This is the website: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp

Now, where it says Tcp Receive Window: 32767, change this number to 65536.

Also, where it shows your network adapter, under Adapter Settngs, type in 1500 for the MaxMTU.

Finally, reboot your computer and when you run the speed test again, it should show a considerable increase.

That is a good post Mike..We have been using DRCTP or a long ime.. Experiment with TCP Rcv if you have not already done so...Try 17520..

Also for verizon air card users using VZ access. With the air card in the PC..NOT in any router. Call up the vzacess program and connect to the internet, Put your mouse pointer over the green signal bars at the VERY BOTTOM of the vzacess window and you will read the RSSI figure..That is the real signal strength that you are receiving from the tower you have acquired, A number of between 65 or so to around 80 is about normal Example the number might read
78 DB.. The lower the better. A high number ,, say 95 indicates a weak received signal and may indicate a need for a external antenna ot a signal booster. Note that signal strength and download speed speed need to be addressed separately. Signal strength (RSSI) is affected by many different things..distance from the acquired tower,
trees, hills, weather. It may be higher at sunrise or sunset.
Download speed is determined by the capabilities of your air card. The verizon 650 is capable of 400 to 700Kbps.. a RevA card up to 1.4 Mbps.. However the ability to receive the rated download speeds is dependent upon the technology of the verizon network at the tower you are acquiring and that is the weak link in the verizon or any system.
Verizon marketing makes a blanket statement that you can receive a certain speed and that is NOT true. Speed test and through put adjustment as suggested above will show your true speed and signal strength..Things marketing does not want us to know about.

It set the TCP/IP and MTU parameters in my PC thereby increasing throughput. You can do the same with this
