Dates on tires!
A couple of days ago we were camping at Lincoln Rock State Park in Wenatchee Wa. I was talking to a Montana owner to get him to join the forum and he started to say that his rig was a 2012 Montana that he ordered new from the factory. On the way out west the guy towing had a flat and had towed it quite a while with it flat as he rolled the wheel over enough that they could not get at the lug nuts... They put the spare on and towed the rest of the way fixing the damage when it was in Tacoma. After they said everything was fixed he had another flat and replaced all the tires finding out the tires that can on the trailer were manufactured 7 years before he bought it.. At that time they also found out that the first flat had tore up the mor-ryde suspension which the dealer did not fix..
I know folks need to inspect before they but 7 year old tires.... I can not believe Montana would let them out the door with those tires on it. I also know that there is going to be 50 replies to this post commenting about PDI, but not everyone going to buy a 5th wheel is going to spend a day or two going over every inch to make sure Montana QC dept. had done their job before the trailer left the factory... I ask how many people on this site think twice about taking delivery of their new Dodge, Ford or Chevy because they need to make sure the QC dept did their job.

I have a hard time believing the tires were 7 years old. Montana gets tires on a JIT basis from Tredit. The tires are already mounted on rims. There is no room at the Montana factory to store 7 years worth of tires. I doubt Tredit has the space either.
What kind of tires were these? A 7 year old tire on a 2012 would be a 2005 version. That would have been a Tacoma brand (made by Cooper in the USA) and the last of the LT tires which were standard on Montanas at that time. Around 2006-2007, Montana used a China built POS tire (isn't that redundant?) which I have forgotten the name of (not Marathon and the damn Search function is broken and can't help).
The tire date code is pretty easy to read but you have to remember it is only stamped on one side of the tire (usually the inside sidewall). I think someone was mistaken about the date code. But it is a good idea to always check the date code on any tire one acquires.

Could be he was mistaken Carl.. He said he was going to join so I will be watching for a chief engineer working in Dutch Harbor on a crab processing boat.

I have a problem with 7 years, but I can tell you when Goodyear agreed to take my Marathons back I was surprised to learn that my end of the production year 2010 Montana was shipped with 2009 tires on it. So I know for a fact that old tires do get on new rigs.

Dick-- What's the birthdate of your 3665? It could be that it was actually built in 2009 and you got new tires on it. Remember they do change over in the middle of the year for the new models and years. Having 7 year old tires on a new rig sounds real suspicious to me Drifty1.

Ours was manufactured in June of 2010 and the tires were manufactured in September of 2009. We bought the rig new in May of 2011.

Tredit told us at the rally they will not mount tires older than 1 year of age. But Dick, that makes your tires in their specs. Mine were the same on our 10 model too.

I wasn't surprised by it. Since Keystone specs the low price, tires that dealers don't want are going to be cheaper and, at least the dealers out here, don't want to stock anything but fresh tires.

It has occurred to me that maybe the tires had been changed after the rig left the factory. Maybe by a less than scrupulous dealer? Just thinking.

I strongly doubt it. It was in the one year specs so it met the standard.
