Dogbone question

With all the various dogbones they make for adapting to different campground electrical. Is there one that will adapt a campground with a 20 amp and a 30 amp panel to the 50 male RV cord?

Yes there are several available. I just bought one from Amazon made by Camco, around $16.

Yes, it will work fine. On Amazon do a search for 15m/50f RV adapter.

Sorry...just to be clear...I am looking for a dogbone that will plug into the campsite 20 amp AND the 30 amp in order to provide 50 amps to the RV. Seems like it should be a readily available item. ‘Course that being said...I am new to this..

The answer to that question is no. Those were very popular until campgrounds changed to GFI outlets and then they wouldn't work. The only way to get that to work is to replace the GFI outlet with a non-GFI one and no campground would be likely to let you do it.

Our observation most campgrounds will not allow dogbones maybe because of internal grid risks. Have seen staff tell folks to disconnect them.

Just so you are aware, your rig has a 50 amp system, which provides 100 amps of capacity. You get 50 amps at 120 volts on each leg, so even if you did use one of these dogbones, you will only be getting half of the power that you would get from a true 50 amp connection. Also, with one of these devices, I'm pretty sure you will only get 20 or 15 amps on one side of your panel and 30 amps on the other side, and you will not know which side powers your air conditioner until a breaker trips. You will likely be much better off just using a 30 amp dogbone and turn your water heater and fridge over to gas only, and just manage your electric loads.

Speaking of 30 amp service... Our 3400RL is supposed to accept 30 or 50 amps. But, when I'm forced to use the 30 amp cord half of the camper doesnt work. No 12v power at all, battery doesn't charge, a/c doesn't work and the fridge turns off after the battery dies. It's like one pole on the plug isnt getting power. Everything is fine with 50 amp power. The 30 amp cord is brand new. Suggestions?

You'd have to open up the trailer end of the 30A cord and modify/jumper it so the hot wire is making contact with both poles.

With your dogbone plugged into a 30 amp outlet and with the breaker turned on, using a voltmeter, you should be able to read voltage on both the hotlegs at the 50 amp end. If you do, you either have something not connected in your shore cable, or something in your rig is not working. The dogbone splits the single 30 amp hotleg to feed both the 50 amp hotlegs, if the dogbone is working.

I checked the camper end of the power cord and there are already wires to both poles plus the ground.. I'll get my multimeter out and check to see if both wires are hot. If not, I'll get a dogbone to connect the 30 amp plug to a 50 amp supply and see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestion.

A correctly manufactured 30 amp cord that has a 50 connector at the trailer end will give you 120 vac to all outlets. It is basically the same as a 30/50 dogbone adapter except longer. I have a 30 amp cord that I use in cool weather when I don’t need the air conditioners rather than drag out the heavy 50 amp cord.

Tell me about heavy. The 50 amp cord that came with the rig is about a mile long and easily weighs several hundred pounds. Or maybe it just seems like it. Does the a/c not normally work on 30 amps? What about all your 12v stuff?

Everything works fine on 30 amps as long as you are conscience of power draws. If we have an A/C running, use the microwave, and the clothes dryer starts in the heating mode, or some other combination of high power draw, it will likely trip a 30 amp breaker. Not really a problem. Just reset the breaker and don’t do that again.

This where a hybrid inverter comes in real handy.
