AFAIK, those pumps are self priming. Hook it up, ensure there is water in the tank, and turn it on.

If you're asking because it's not priming, you probably have a loose connection on the suction side. Not an uncommon issue.

How about the pump running for 3 seconds or so every 5 minutes. No water being used. Started that this weekend. Pump bleeding pressure back?

That condition could be a leaking check valve in the pump. This won't hurt a thing even though it is annoying.

Make sure the water valve is not in the “fill position”. That solved identical problem I had.

I had the same issue yesterday and the fill valve was left in the fill position. Pump ran every couple minutes. Turn it to normal flow and it's running normally now.

I could not get any water with the pump valve set for normal. It would work in bypass mode but no hot water. Had to change water input valve. I guess there is a check valve built into it. Easy job and not expensive
