Handicap Placard ??

Just curious...
Have any of our full timer South Dakota "neighbors" had occasion to request a handicap placard through the treasurer/DMV in South Dakota, and what was the experience like.

My registration and DL are SD, but the doctors certification is Florida. Wondering if SD will honor this...?

Interested in this post as I am just now sending my paperwork to SD and hoping they will do it by mail also.

I can't answer your question but I will this bit of fact: the placards that hang from your rear view mirror can get you a ticket if you leave it hanging there while you are driving. Michigan's placard specifically states you should not drive with it hanging in place. I suspect most, if not all states have the same law. The placards can block your vision, especially for motorcycles. The law here won't typically pull you over for it, but if you get pulled over for something else or are involved in an accident, expect a ticket.

We just did it this summer. Had a California placard until it expired this year.

Procedure: South Dakota website has a form your doctor needs to fill out for you.

Ours went like this.... We were in Montana already when we found out we needed the Dr in California, to fill out the form.

Since we can communicate with our doctor thru email, I asked if we could email the form, have the dr fill it out and they mailed it to our mail service in Box Elder, SD.

We picked up the mail (since we were going to be there) with the form signed by our (his) dr, filled out Bob's part, he went in to SD treasure in Rapid City (where pick up license plates) and came out with the placard.

(FYI... The website tells you where to take the form and get the placard.)

I'm hoping I don't have to go to SD to actually pick it up and that they will mail it to me.

Just did that!

I downloaded the SD DMV form, had my doctor fill it out, sent it in to Americas Mailbox (my mail handler), and they stood in line, got the 2 cards and mailed them to me in Sacramento. Total cost was $10 to Americas Mailbox for the service.

Quick and easy response.

Good luck to you.
