somerset dining room chairs
Had the back break on one of these chairs early on in 2013 (bought unit new in aug 2012). So me being me, moved it next to the wall so it wouldn't get used till I could fix it. Slow forward to today...took back off and was dismayed to find that how it is made. Picture a piece of 3/4" plywood cut to a slight curve one inch wide and is the width of the back. That is the top of the back. Add one more for the bottom of the chair back. Now connect these two with a narrow piece of soft wood on each side of the back and another in the middle of the back...held together with a staple shot through the plywood top and bottom. Cover the front and back of this crudely formed chair back with regular thin corregated cardboard stapled in place. Glue foam in place each side and slip cover on and staple in place. Now screw this back into place between chair rails without predrilling to insure that it has a good possibility of cracking the softwood. That is how they are made. SO I glued the split wood back together in three places and will recover it tomorrow. John
