How to transport a portable Waste Tank

I have a Montana 2955RL and I need to transport a Thetford SmartTote 27 Gal Portable Waste Tank. Has anyone used the roof ladder to hang their Waste Tank? I am interested in successes, failures and any suggestions.

I CARRY MINE ON A BIKE RACK ATTACHED TO THE LADDER

I wouldn’t recommend just lying it in the back of the pick-up. The reason why I say that is because I’ve done that and while traveling on the highway at 55MPH speeds the blue tank levitated up and got sucked out right over the side of the bed. I know that sounds weird but that’s exactly what happened. The air current that was generated was strong enough to allow that to happen.

Approx. 13 years on the road as fulltimers with our waste tank in the truck box without any loss or damage other than the time I dropped the pin on the waste tank while unhooking- So we bought a new tank- JMHO- Don

On my last unit, I fabricated a tote holder/bracket underneath the back of the camper. There was no underbelly covering in the back to it was almost hidden when in the travel position. I know on the Montana's they like to put the spare under the back. You could move the spare to the bumper and mount the tote in it's place. Possibly even using the same cable system to raise and lower it. Of course it would need to have a holder for it fabricated. Here is what mine looked like. Just an idea.

I have in the past used the ladder with no problems. Currently place it in the truck bed and bungee it down with no problems for MANY miles.

My blue 4 Wheeler is on my ladder now. No rack, just 2 ratchet straps. One vertical and one horizontal. Holds it very secure.

I can't lift a full tank up to the ladder. Empty tank, no problem. Full tank, bad idea...

Getting the loaded tank up on the ladder wasn't a problem; I just used an old "Sky Hook" I had left over from my scouting days. The problem came as I was driving home. I asked my wife to follow me closely in her new convertible, just in case the tank started to come loose, but the two straps held it fine. Unfortunately on about the forth bump I hit in the highway, the fill cap popped off and the rest is history. Does anyone know how to get 27 Gals of S#it out of a VW Convertible?

Mine is very low profile which I store in the basement. The few times I use it, it is tripled rinsed with bleach water and washed and scrubbed on the outside. Stores nicely, doesn't stink at all as it fully cleaned after every use. I stow my two lawn recliners and folding tables on top of it which works perfectly and no fear of it being stolen or lost.

Seriously, thanks for the feedback! I am storing the EMPTY tank on my ladder, using two ratchet straps and it worked perfectly on our trip yesterday.

I don't know what's kidding any more, but I think the blue tank is expected to be used to empty the dump tanks then you transport this to a dump station and dump it then clean it.

I hope it's all kidding that anyone ever carries one of these full! The weight of the thing can't be good for the ladder or bumper (or you) over time. You might as well leave the contents in the rig's tanks where they are more designed for travel than this portable tank, then the first part of the trip is to a dump station.

I view these things as a transporter ONLY, fill it, then dump it and clean it before doing anything else. I see plenty of owners towing or rolling their tote to a dump station and follow this procedure. I have never seen anyone dump tanks into the tote, then drive off without dumping it.

I pretty much believe everything I read in this forum since I know the membership is not a bunch of liars, kidders, yes but certainly not liars. Someone (JohnsonW) please tell me I'm being gullible... again.
