Cold weather traveling

Planning on going to Elkhart In. Thanksgiving week. Is there any way to keep water lines from freezing while on the road, assuming of course that it will be below freezing then? I'm going to the Morryde plant to get the suspension upgraded.

The easiest way is to winterize, either blow out the lines with low pressure or inject the pink stuff into all lines. When we winterize our rig, it only takes about 3 1/2 gallons of the pink stuff, which is a little over $10. Cheap insurance and easy to do.

I am thinking of the same issue.
I am going to get a remote thermometer and place the sending unit in basement and carry receiver in cab. When temp gets down to 32 I plan on stopping and run the furnace to get temp back up to 50 or so.

I feel you will like the IS. I do along with the disc brakes.

we have found that while traveling on the road, we add antifreeze to the tanks, and the toilet bowl, but that all the bouncing around on the road keeps the lines free (unless really cold, ie close to zero). Even in the mid 20s when camped, we have not had a freezing issue, other than the city water hose.

Last winter, when traveling in 29 degree weather, I blew our lines out before we moved each day until we got to warmer weather.

We usually chicken out and carry anti-freeze for the toilet and fresh water for drinking and coffee. For us it's usually only two days while trying to escape illinois for warmer climes in January. We do keep the propane furnace on while driving to keep the fresh food from freezing. I'm always nervous about doing that, but so far it works ok. We still leave the anti-freeze in the water lines until we know we're safe.

This is a bit late for you but we've several times been on the road with temperatures as low as 12 or 13 fahrenheit. We just set the furnace on 45 before taking off and never had any freezing problems while on the road. Since we're fulltimers we never use the antifreeze or blow out the lines. When we stop the traveling and start putting the rig away for the winter, then we'll go back to winterizing the water lines.

X2 on the comment that you'll love the IS and disk brakes. We love ours. One thing to be aware of is that, at least in summer, the Amish workers start at the plant at around 4am. You'll be in there trying to sleep when the air compressor (huge) comes on at 4. By 5am their welding and everything else in there. Luckily there are some really good early breakfast places in Goshen.

Ha! Reminded me of one winter trip we took from K.C. just starting to get cold, we thought we could get to Arizona without winterizing, but when we got to Albuquerque, it got COLD, strong winds and cold. So we unhooked and went to Walmart, they were out of it, the other Walmart in town was out too, so I bought a big jug of Vodka, put some cranberry juice in it and winterized with that! Worked... True, no joke there.

"Far-Out" on vodka and cranberry juice. When struggling to get by financially my Dad as a young man during freezing weather said he would drain the water at night from his car. One can tow to above freezing night temps in one day from Tennessee, but have considered carrying the pink antifreeze along for the ride.

I'll bet the trailer Zig Zagged down the road using the Vodka.

And just think, no clean out necessary. Just hook up the water, open the faucets and start drinking what comes out. But you better like Vodka and cranberry juice.

Good minds think alike Art, I was curious about the "de-winterization" process as well??
