Another Tire Question
Seeing all the tire horror stories, I have decided to purchase the G614s at the local Goodyear dealer, five tires at 1800.00 out the door. What they fill the tires with is Nitrogen, and that is something I'm not familiar with. Is using Nitrogen all right or should I have them fill them with just air. Thanks in advance for your advise/comments.

Nitrogen is good because there is less fluctuation in tire pressure with outside temperatures and use. Problem comes in with finding a dealer that uses nitrogen if you need to top them off because you don't want to just add air to them.

Mine are filled with nitrogen as that's the way they were installed. I top them off with my own compressor that I know contains less moisture than filling stations. I'm not 100% convinced, however, that it is worth paying extra for in a RV application with aluminum wheels.

The way I understand it is that nitrogen filled tires means there's a much higher percentage of Nitrogen over Oxygen not that it's pure Nitrogen or pure Oxygen. Since Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules it has been found that tires lose less air when filled with higher concentration of nitrogen. Nitrogen is also less susceptible to temperature fluctuations so it does not reduce psi via condensation in cold weather like oxygen or expand as much as oxygen in hot weather. This means tire psi is much better maintained and tire rot is reduced.
The disadvantages are whomever provides nitrogen will tend to charge for it and if there is a need to refill for whatever reason (but if you're not losing air, huh?) then nitrogen can be harder to find. You can certainly refill the tires with conventional air but the result is diluted nitrogen in the tire and then you're back to the original air-in-the-tire maintenance procedures.
In the long run, I have found if I am very overly conscious about tire care (I'm checking them often and periodically anyway), then I don't need the extra hassle of locating or paying for Nitrogen. In California, service stations are no longer allowed to charge for customers to inflate tires so why change now. After all, free, conventional air has been used since pneumatic tires were invented. If they want to come up with something better, it can be free too.

I would hesitate to the use of nitrogen. You can't get it wherever you want to, for one thing. It's likely you'd have to pay for it if you need to pressure up. If it was me, I'd go to the tire experts and seek their advice. Those tire people I've talked to are not for it. My question would be, "What's the advantages versus disadvantages of using nitrogen?"

If the Monty was going to race on the race track I would by all means put nitrogen in them. If not, total waste of good money IMHO!!

X2 with dave and linda. Pulling trailers since 1971, no blowout to date. I am anal about quality tires, common sense speed, and regular PSI checks.

Nitrogen is fine if they want to put it in the tires...just don't pay extra for it, not worth it.

Yep - just had our pressures checked there today and where we purchased our last couple sets of tires.

Put nitrogen in your aircraft tires. Save your money and put air in your RV tires.

Nitrogen does not support cumbustion and is said to lessen the chance of a blow-out to high heat in a tire?

Just for info, the air we breathe is 78% nitrogen.
