Fresh Water Tank question
H2O Experts
We full time and are about to return to Canada where we will stay put for about 7 months. Should I leave the FWT full, empty, drain open/closed ?
edit to clarify question -
While sitting for 7 months, should the FWT be full/empty/etc?
Thx for your advice!
-Steve

I don't consider myself an expert. But, what I do when traveling from place to place I put in enough to get me there. If I am going to someplace where there are no water hookups, I fill the fresh water tank.
When I am parked at home for a period of time I drain the tank and then start fresh when I head out again. It would not hurt every year or two to add a little bleach to a full tank and let it sit over night and then drain and start fresh. I am lax doing this and have not had any problems.
With all this said I have traveled many times with a full tank with no adverse effect.

Thank you Joe
I posed a poor question. I am wondering about the tank while we are sitting in one place for 7 months, not while travelling to get there.

We leave some in the tank. You never know when the water supply will be interrupted. Having said this, we do empty and sanitize about every two months.

We're the same way. I keep the tank at least a third full if not more and then empty it and refill every couple of months. We've had issues when even the city water malfunctioned at places where we were and it's always nice to be able to get by while they work on it.

We also keep some in tank for backup. Sanitize once a year with clorox.

I would drain it if you are not going to use it for 7 months. The water will go stale. You might want to sanitize the system when you use it again.

We keep the tank full except if we were going store in freezing temps. Use a product called Purogene which keeps the water fresh and tasty.

We don't use the fresh water tank for any drinking or cooking water. Bad thing happen in water that is left in dark tank. We use bottled water if the RV park does not have good water. OK--that is being very cautious--but we have never had any adverse effects doing that and did not sense we were missing anything. As for traveling--10-15 gallons is plenty to run the toilets.

Since we just bought our Montana I have not utilized the fresh water tank yet or stored water in it. But based on our experience with water tanks in larger boats, you need to rotate the water out of these types of tanks. In the marine environment it depended on the quality of water you filled the tank with and the outside temperature. In hotter temps the water just does not stay fresh as long. As someone else mentioned, a little bleach works or adding FreshWater additive helps.

That's exactly what we do. Bottled water for drinking and water thru filter system at RV Park for cooking. The fresh water tank is for traveling with no more than 1/3 full. Wife isn't to warm & fuzzy about drinking or cooking from the FWT.

I'm always amazed at what I see as I travel. People are almost paranoid about water being in their fresh water tank for any length of time yet the will use one of those transparent hoses that coil up connected to their city water input. The fresh water tank is completely opaque and is underneath the floor where no light gets to it. Yet those hoses, because they are transparent allow the sun to beat on them and create all kinds of algae in the hose. Which is better, the fresh water tank or water coming from a hose full of algae?

I'm with Orv ... amazed. Sounds like RV manufacturers should consider offering the fresh water tank as an option to cut costs and reduce weight ...
