Batteries

We will only be boon docking on very rare occasions, maybe one night at a time. What is a good battery configuration? Would you recommend two 6 volt batteries or what 12 volt battery group sizes? We do not have a generator at this time. Thanks for any help you can provide us.

Two 12 volt marine/deep cycle batteries in parallel are plenty for your application, and the cheapest way to go. Make sure you have a converter/charger that has the 3-level charge capability, often called bulk/absorption/float. Some will have an equalization function as well that puts a higher voltage on the batteries every week or so to prevent sulfation.

If you plan in the future on doing any extensive (3 days or more) of boon docking I would get the 6 volt batteries. But if you know down the road that it is only going to be 1 night at a time then the two 12 volt deep cycle batteries would be enough.

We have the 2 6-volt battery set-up with a couple of solar panels on the roof. We spent a month at Quartzite this year and that worked well for us. We found that by using the 6-volt batteries, we always had enough juice to run our coffee pot at 0 dark 30 in the mornings without disturbing neighbors with our generator.

We also have the 2 6-volts and it works great. Unfortunately, we had our unit in for service for part of the winter. Water in the batteries got low and cracked. Just replaced them with Trojan 105 golf cart batteries. Adding a battery watering system for my next modification. I agree for a day here and there that 12v is the cheaper route.

We replaced the lead acid batteries with the 12 volt AGM batteries. They don't have to be vented and don't have to filled with water. They last longer and charge faster but they are expensive. I could never remember to check the wet batteries and they would burn up. We do very little boondocking but it's nice to know we have the power to make it through the night.

Two 12 volts will be fine. We just got back from a 4 day trip to the high country and the two 12 volt batteries did fine never had to even hook up the generator. But we didn't watch TV and didn't need the A/C
