Horrible smell
I have a 2013 3582RL. We have noticed on our last two camping trips after using the toilet, we turn on vent fan, then mega strong septic smell is coming from the vents on the stairs. The smell is overwhelming! I do add chemicals to black tank.
I see no leaks coming from underneath the RV.
Any thoughts?

I wonder if your vent pipe has come loose from your black tank.

Agree, Vent is a likely cause if tank has been properly dumped.

The cap on my vent pipe managed to close and caused some problems.

Could it not be a mouse that died in the belly of the beast? John

Check the air admittance valves on the bathroom and kitchen sink drain pipes. These valves will release terrible sewer smells if you have the gray water valves open and especially when a vent or a/c is running. If you have roof vents from your tanks these valves are not needed. I have removed these valves on my last two 5vers due to them releasing sewer odors. Never have any odor after removing/plugging.

Of course, the other causes could be that the seam around the top of the black or grey tank have opened up, the valves operating either tank are leaking into the belly, or the output plumbing has a joint not glued or failing. Bottom off will tell you a lot...but I would first look infrom the top to see how things look from inside the basement. By the way, does the basement smell worse than what you smell inside? It should if it is a tank issue. John

We had a terribnle odor in the bathroom on a couple trips. After you check all the good possibilities above, check to make sure your battery has not boiled dry. Thought ours was a maintanence free, found out otherwise. Terrile odor. Good luck.

I would start by putting water down the black tank vent first as mentioned above and work from there. It could be a lot of things as those power vents can really draw air out the vent and reversely in from somewhere else.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are home now, I got on the roof, poured gallons of water down the vent pipe, no water coming out the belly. I crawled under the belly, and no water. I removed a couple screws from the belly panel, observed the black tank, and she is dry. Went into the basement, removed one panel where smell was coming from, all dry, and no odor.
This is the second camping trip this has happened.

One other thing is when I first had my 2012 I had a terrible smell coming out of all drains and my water etc.. that smelled like sewer and I could not figure it out until I read a post on another forum and it turned out my Washer/Dryer lines had stagnant water in them so I hooked a hose to both lines and let them run outside for awile and then....NO SMELL anyway that is another possibility

The odor is the strongest in the space between the stairs and bulkhead of basement. Whenever you turn on a vent in the Montana, it creates a draft from the stair vents bringing in the odor with it. It smells like sewage, but for the life of us, we cannot find the origin.

Darnell-- We have the same unit as you have and have not had that problem pop up yet. I'd give Keystone Customer Service a call and see what they say and also it gives you a chance to get the problem put on a file with them. IF they do not help any, I'd be going down to a local dealer and talk to one of the Service Managers there and see what they have to say. If you've checked under the unit for leaks and taken the wall out from the basement to see if there is anything leaking there with not results, I can't give you any other suggestion except for the possibility of a broken/cracked pipe that is going into the top of your black tank and the sewer gases coming from the tank are leaking out there. Please let us know what you find out once you discover where you are getting the smell from.

I agree with purging your water lines for washer prep. It smells like the sewer. Let us know if you checked that.

Might it have been that on the two trips you were close to someone that left their grey valves open making you the recipient of the park sewer gas? Since your at home checks had no results, my guess you are sucking in someone else's stuff. Best I got. Good luck. John

A couple months ago, we developed a strong sewer smell, and I checked everything. Found nothing, drained, flushed the black tank, and added double the treatment, with no change. I finally tried Odorlos treatment in both gray tanks. In a couple days, the smell was totally gone. The only thing I could attribute the smell to, was due to us being stationary for the last several months, and not getting the agitation of waste in the tanks. I have continued using Pure Power Blue in the black tank, and the Odorlos in the gray tanks, with excellent results.

Did you ever solve this problem?? We are having the same issue. Read somewhere about possible propane leak - we actually had a small one, but that has not solved the problem. Would greatly appreciate hearing how/what you did. Thanks.

Check where the washer drains. If no washer the drain pipe needs to be caped.

We had a similar problem and the odor was coming from the galley tank, once cleaned and sanitized, all returned to normal.
