Here we go again, that OKC fuel,
Well we hit the road this morning headed to Albuquergue, 7 miles east of Tucumcari we went back into limp home mode. Fuel filters here are about 51 dollars each, I bought 2. I pulled the new one from yesterdays episode off and dumped fuel into clean white bucket. NOTHING but clean water free fuel. No dirt or crud and no evidence of water. I checked with local diesel truck shop and most of them haven't worked on a Duromax cause they don't seem to break. Their opinion is that there is a large amount of crud, dirt, junk in the tank and when we get below 1/2 half tank the crud blocks the strainer. Only option is to yank tank and dump and flush. The fuel pump is not in the tank, it is an in line unit. There is a strainer. Going rate here is 75.00 per hr for labor and to yank tank and flush is about 4 to 5 hrs. Any suggestions would help. We are at the Tucumcari KOA for the night but will keep tank above 1/2 full untill we get to Vegas then will look around a shop to pull the tank..

I don't think the Dmax has an up lift pump the only one it has is the high pressure fuel pump. We can hope it isn't affected. Probably isn't yet but you do NOT won't to keep on running your truck. If any of the "crud" gets to that pump it's going to be a very expensive repair bill. The HPFP and all of the injectors will need to be replaced. Good luck.

The fuel filter is between the fuel pickup and the HPFP and it appears as if there is no crud even getting to the filter. If the blockage is in fact inside the tank and not through the filter then how will it get into the HPFP and injectors? I just changed the filter I put in yesterday and it is clean and I got zero crud out of it.

If there is no crud getting to the filter you are in good shape. Lucky you.

sounds like the injector pump is going south or the pressure is going bad. I would let the a dealer put in on the computer. Had one on a 2001 go bad. They can load the engine in the shop to put a heavy load to check the pump and pressure regulator out.

Have shop or competent person check the leads on the fuel pressure regulator. Gm had a tsb that affected my 2001 duramax, but my effect was loss of prime pressure. Gm uses a mechanical fuel pump at the tank from what I read on it.
My dealership replaced the electrical pigtail on the fuel regulator which were well corroded. It solved my issue.
Crud in the tank? I disagree.

Low fuel rail pressure code could be a bad fuel rail pressure sensor. Actual fuel rail pressure must be checked. Proper diagnosis will save you tons of $$$$ in guess work.

Either way we have to drive another 200 miles to find a dealer. There is nothing even close to Tucumcari. So it is off to Albuquerque in the morning.

Dave, do not like hearing about your troubles. I believe you have a lot less pollution control on your 2006 then on my 2007. When my Dodge was acting like this Dodge started with draining the tank and flushing the fuel line to injectors. Unfortunately they had to replace all my pollution control parts, including the DPF,intercooler and throttle valve. I am going to install a CAT prefilter next month to try and stop particulates before they get to the OEM filter.. There are members on the forum that think I am nuts to do this but if buying a few extra filters helps prevent these events then so be it. I wish you luck and hope your bill will be no where near what mine was...

Hi
I just repaired one that had the same problem.
You should have a check engine light and the code will be “low fuel rail pressure”.
There is not a pump in the tank. The only pump is the injection pump and it pulls the fuel from the tank and the filter is in the “suction” side of the pump.
I repaired the truck I was working on by resealing the fuel filter housing.
Most any large auto parts store should have the fuel filter housing reseal kit in stock.
It is not a difficult job the hardest part is removing the entire filter and housing from the engine.

I would not drive that truck 200 miles. If the HPFP is being starved for fuel it could be damaged. These
pumps are extremely fragile and will be without proper lube.

Phil P. hit on the probable cause. It's a fairly common problem on the Dmax.

Had to replace all my o rings using this primer kit, I was able to determine that it was the primer/fuel filter housing due to the fact I could not get primer to pump fuel, don't know if this will help, but try using the primer and see if it will pump up and should start to feel hard to prime. This worked on my 2008

since I have changed two filters and primed them both times I don't have a problem with the prime at all. The codes for low fuel rail pressure was there as I stated before as well as two glow plug failures, #6 and #8.. I have already replaced the glow plugs and had no more check engine lights. As soon as the 1st rolls around I will make a run to the Chevy dealer and get a full diagnostic run on the truck. I kept the speed below 65 the rest of the trip and from Kingman to Vegas I barely hit 50 since there are 3 very large humps (big hills) between Kingman and Vegas. The one in Kingman starts out at 35 and goes straight to 65 on a 6% grade. I took my time and got in line with all the other trucks and RVs trying to make the top and got almost to 45 on that hill. the other two were not quite as bad but it was still a load. No further problems arose with the fuel or the engine.

In my case the primer pump still worked. The problem was the seals were leaking air so bad I had to work the primer pump to keep the engine running at an idle.
Like someone else said the pump will not tolerate pumping air bubbles for any length of time.
