Generator

For those of you who use a generator, is it a permanently mounted generator or is it one you place outside the rv.

We have two Harbor Freight 2000W Predator generators and a 30A parallel kit. We carry them on a rear hitch cargo carrier. I made a ten foot 30A to 59A cable to plug it directly into thd back of the rig.
I found operating the generators on the carrier made them louder than operating them sitting on the ground. I put yoga mat under them and it greatly reduced the noise and vibration.

Isn't it difficult to do your yoga routines with the generators hogging the space?

I have a 3000 watt Honda that I carry in my truck for my HC and a 5000 watt Harbor Freight that is mounted permanently on the back of my motor home. It is mounted on springs to keep all the vibration out of the camper. We can’t hardly hear it run in the camper.

I must have the only Onan generator that hasn’t lived up to the reputation. My 4000 watt Microquiet is broken for the second time in less than a hundred hours. I had it fixed the first time and decided it wasn’t worth fixing the second time. I could buy a 5000 watt Predator for less than the cost of fixing the Onan. It’s quieter than the Onan doesn’t vibrate the camper and if it breaks it’s easy to fix or replace.

You are not the only one. Our motorhome had an Onan and we'd have problems about every 150 hours.

We carry a single Honda 2000. We used to carry two and a parallel kit, but the lithium batteries recharge so quickly, I only need one.

We've decided to go with a WEN 4500 inverter generator. It is a portable that will sit on a slide out rack. When running, it will be slid out so it is outside the rv. I toyed with the idea of mounting it permanently then modifying the exhaust to get it outside the unit and building an enclosure to keep the heat away from the interior surfaces, but doing all of that is a pain. I saw a post where someone mounted a portable of a slide out tray so I am just copying their idea. Once complete, I'll post pictures.

When I bought our Motor Home it had 5000 miles on it and the generator had 36 hours on it. It was broke so I found a man that repaired generators for a living mostly Onans. He and I became friends. He said the old Onans were better than the new ones and took me around his shop and showed me the difference. I came away convinced the old ones were better.
So when mine quit for the second time he had passed and I decided there was no use in fixing it again and brought a Predator 3500 then a 5000 watt to replace it. We have an Onan authorize repair shop here but I’ve heard so many horror stories about them I wouldn’t take anything to them. For instance replacing a generator when all that was needed was a spark plug.

Best to get it away from the rig to reduce noise and vibration.

We carry ours in the rear of the truck. It is placed on the ground near the rear of the camper (cable and lock for security) during use.
