Side load on tires & wheels

Here is an example of why we are having some problems with the spring hangers and tires.
.

These pictures show how much side load is on the tires and axels. Look at the tire marks on the pavement. There wasn’t any way to make the turn wider. It is no wonder we are having trouble with the spring hangers.

Agreed! The first time I backed our Monty into a campground space I thought the tires were going to peel right off the rims. Incredible stress

Several of the newer Keystone travel trailers are going to the wide stance axles (spaced about 3 times what ours are). They actually drag the rear tires sideways in tight turns similar to tractor trailers with the wide stance axles.

Another reason on sharp turns like that to pull forward, let the tires straighten out to normal, and then back back in. I routinely see folks pull in with tight turns and just leave the tires and springs stressed.

Agreed. Saw this tip posted before and always follow it. You can really tell the difference visually.

Hi

IS will not change what you see there? However the way Mor/ryde fastens the IS system to the frame greatly reinforces the frame in that area and removes the spring hangers.

Hi

Yes I had to pull forward twice to get straight. The TV doesn’t have a turn radius that will let me make that turn without pulling forward to get straight. Then on top of that I had an electric box and a tree on the far side of the road that I had to dodge with the front of the truck.

I believe some damage has been done on the suspension of some units at the dealers, have you ever witnessed "happy" on the forklift moving these things around and in and out of tight spots.

The mounting points of the axles on these units are not sufficient, it is a wonder there are not more problems.

dqdick, can you tell me what a IS is. I had the lippert bar installed on my new Montana before I took delivery in december. the bar goes across from wheel to wheel and is bolted to the middle spring hanger. is that what you are talking about?

One of the reasons when I had a short bed truck I never used the slide on the hitch. I avoid at all costs jacking the trailer around in really tight turns. I know there are times when it cant be avoided but in the 2 years I had that truck I never did use the slide. It probably rusted in place lol lol But even on small turns you can see the tires are not aligned, so pulling back and forth to straighten them is a good idea.

I'm sorry, it's independent suspension.

That is also one of the reasons we have trouble with our tires. Those side loads tear the tread loose

With IS you do eliminate spring hangers, but you have the same stresses on tires, wheels, bearings, and spindles. You do eliminate the weakest link in the equation though.
