I got my camper in a site at Yellowstone that you could not get out of. We couldn't go backwards couldn't go forward. There was a tree in the way when we tried to pull out. The space was a curved pull out and when we pulled forward there was a pine tree leaning over in the site. What to do? We put a nylon binder strap up in the pine tree ratcheted it over enough to get out. The side of the camper still touched but it didn't hurt anything.

Oh goodness, sorry but I think I wet myself while reading this (and so did my DW). This stirred memories of a similar incident I had....but no one from the office would help Me!

Sounds like at least you could teach how to back up the rig at the next MOC National Rally in Goshen!

I really don't care when the people at the park laugh, I will leave the park and never see them again. It is when my wife is laying on the ground rolling and laughing that gets to me cause I never hear the end of it.
My wife really helps out and it would be impossible to park with out her sometimes but once in a while!!

Here's my story from a park in Ravenna, Ohio. I hope this works as I haven't mastered the forum. http://billandjanrvingtheusa.blogspo...-to-spare.html
The blog is titled An Inch to Spare and this was in September. The story of it is about halfway down the page. The photo was when I finally made it out of there. Didn't think about any other photos when I was navigating the path.
Very funny since it didn't happen to me, not so much for you guys.

We were traveling through Arizona and at hiway marker 147 I think, had a sign with a trailer, so we too the turnoff, followed it around a curve and came upon a railroad grossing arch that wasn't high enough for the Monte. All of a sudden a whole line of cars and trucks came to where I stopped. Fortunately at the curve was a fence gate open to a field, so I talked to the line of people behind me to move about and guide me so I could maneuver backwards through the gate. An hour later we were free and everyone cheered. Now mind you, it was 730 PM and flat out dark and traffic wanted to go through the arch facing my way and it wide enough for one vehicle, ugh.

I tried to turn around at the end of a road after someone decided to close a gate early. Thank goodness for having a 4WD truck, although I still couldn't make the turn and ended up backing for a half mile. Recently I tried to make a reservation in the Keys. The owner was honest and told me we would easily fit in the site but there was no way in hell I could get to it because of their 1960's layout.

Phil sounds crazy but we got in unhooked for a few days. When we rehooked it would NOT come out too many trees and logs in the was to get the truck lined up. We took nylon traps pulled a small pine tree over a few inches inches and got out while several people watched.

Just abit of a change, but FYI... In Leadville, CO, the alley just East of the main street, there is a sign that says, "RV Parking"......uhhhh, dont believe it unless you are in a pickup camper. I went down the alley and no way to turn into the so-called parking lot for RV's, and on the passenger side is a concrete lined ditch. Kept going South to where the alley "T'd" with a street, except it was a narrow street with a power pole on the drivers side and a snow plow straight ahead, so no way to make a wide turn either way. I knew I couldnt back it out of there, so by just shifting back and forth and turning easy to the right, I finally got out of there, but my trailer tires were on the edge of the ditch and just missed the power pole with the tail of the RV. Several folks were watching that journey of mine, and once I made it out, I got a rousing hand of applause.... never again will I go down an alley...or believe signs.. Also, I too have had situations like those mentioned above in my 50 years of RVing, and it's not funny to me or my bride.

In 2011 we stayed at the KOA in Billings Montana (KOA #1). A brochure we picked up in the office featured the Pictograph Cave State Park, 5 miles out of town. We asked one of the staff if the parking lot had RV parking. "Oh yeah" was the reply. We left KOA the next morning with our 29' Nash behind us. We reached the turnoff with a nice sign pointing the way to the park (it didn't give the park hours, curiously enough). We drove down a LONG, NARROW road a few miles when we came to a closed, locked gate. Nowhere to turn around, cut bank on the right, fill bank on the left. Nothing to do but back up a mile or so to a driveway that I MIGHT be able to back into. I had backed up about about 1/2 mile (and 45 minutes) when a pickup went flying by me. We stopped and watched. He was unlocking the gate! We started driving toward the gate again. The guy in the pickup drove through the gate...and...oh #&@!...he was closing it behind him! We started honking the horn and flashing the lights to get his attention. He stopped. When we got to him, he was a grumpy rancher who owned the land around the State Park. The park was a mile further. I had to beg him to let me drive through so I could turn around in the parking lot and get out. We did. And he let us back out. We thanked him. He just glared at us and locked the gate behind us. Never did see the Pictographs. Oh, and the parking lot? If it hadn't been empty, not sure we could have ever got through it with our rig. Morale of the story? If you don't know, don't go!

Traveling the Natchez Trace Parkway, had to get fuel so we got off and went a few blocks. Instead of getting back on the way we got off, I consulted my GPS that directed me to a different entrance to the Parkway. After a few blocks, the road ran UNDER the Parkway, but there was no entrance ramp! We continued, thinking there would be another way onto the Parkway. No such luck. After a couple of miles, the road got narrow with ditches on both sides... then even more narrow... then turned to dirt, still with ditches on both sides, and no cross roads. Finally found a house that had a "for sale" sign in the yard, no cars in the driveway and it looked like no one was home. So, ended up turning around in the front yard (had to get out and move a couple of cross ties around a flower bed). Left quickly!

DW looks at the parking lots and campgrounds with Google maps satellite view. helps get a layout of the area before you get there and realize you cant turn around. I'm not going to say its perfect and I have gotten into a couple of areas where I had to back out, but it sure helps, especially if you are looking to overnight at a Cracker barrel or similar stop.

I'd rather boondock in a Pilot.
If in doubt for me.....I park and walk to the site.
