clunking from hitch

When I take off from a dead stop a little aggressively I hear a clunk from the hitch. After examining the receiver I notice if I pick up on the receiver there is a little play in the locking pins in the bed plates, which I am assuming causing this noise. Is this something to be concerned about.I noticed at the automotive store there are different size pins, should I try to go to a larger pin or am I just being paranoid being fairly new to this.

They should be either 1/2" or 5/8" diamater. If you are talking about the 4 pins that secure the uprights to the truck bed rails, I believe the should be size for size, where you should not have any play.

It is normal to hear some "clunking" noises in that area. Ours does it all the time. Just check all the connections to make sure they are good. The most important ones are the ones under the truck bed. Make sure the ones that hold the rails to the frame are as tight as you can get them.

I just checked mine before our last trip and found only one bolt loose. And it was just a quarter turn or so.

Good luck.

Scares the heck out of ya!

Mine does it under heavy braking if I just accelerated (in town traffic). No matter how used to it I get, I still duck.

It won't do it if you have a Pull Rite hitch, the hitch only has .300 clearance for the pin.

Had it until I put the Airborne pin box on the 2003 unit. I have the Trailaire on this unit along with a close tolerance B&W Companion hitch and don't get the clunking any more.

I don't think Garyka is talking the pin box and receiver tolerance.

As I read his post, he is talking about the hitch attachment on the truck. On mine (Reese) its the movement of the rails on the removable pins that makes the popping sound.

That's where I am getting my klunk on my 16K Reese hitch. Wife asks every time if something happened...

We have a 18k Pullrite Superglide and have that clunking sound sometimes when stopping. Was going to ask about it but garyka beat me to it. We took it back after installation and CW said it was normal but my understanding with the small pin clearance it shouldn't do that. Maybe the noise is coming from where it is attached to the truck bed, like HamRad. Anybody have other ideas? Kevin thought that the MorRyde Hitch pin might have something to do with it.
Thanks, Sharon
