New cooling unit for fridge

We've had our unit since April 2007. The fridge has never worked right since new. The freezer cools below zero, and the fridge will start at the high 30's. But when food is put in, it gradually works up the the 50's. This is with the door closed. This is not our first RV, and I know the limitations of these units, but this one is not right. It has been in for service three times. They have adjusted the thermoter, and installed new installation. I'm sitting in VA Beach right now, and had to throw out the food the second day we were here. The owner of the dealership where our unit was purchased attempted to get a mobile service here, but none was available during our stay. He contacted Dometic and they are replacing the cooling unit when we return. My question, has anyone else had a cooling unit replaced, and do you think this will solve the problem. I would think that if the cooling unit were bad, the freezer wouldn't be working either. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

TLG I'm no expert here but sounds like the aluminum fins are not in contact with the tube in the back for the refrigerator level. As this is a gravity system if the freezer is working then the fridge should also on the ammonia gas side. Sounds like someone owes you a new fridge..this one never worked.

We had to have ours replaced back in mid-June. Our Montana was built 8/18/06. The new cooling unit works great. Ours acted a bit differently than yours, though. Ours slowly got less and less cool over a period of a few days and then eventually pretty much quit cooling altogether. Pull the outside cover off and see if you see any yellow residue. If so, it's leaking the coolant. That's what ours did. Both the freezer and the refrigerator warmed until everything defrosted in the freezer.

I've heard a few people say about a month after they had the recall fix done on their Dometic refrigerator the cooling system died. And ours died a month after the recall fix. I hope that's just coincidence.

Right...I suspect installing the "fix" can induce stress on the electric heater element where it sits in the boiler. Since that is the location of the failure...likely installing technician hurried up the failure. Its not easy installing the kit so not really his fault.
